Temple player became U.S. citizen day before Gasparilla Bowl
Temple linebacker William Kwenkeu had himself one heck of a two-day stretch this week.
Kwenkeu’s Owls won the Gasparilla Bowl on Thursday over Florida International. Wednesday, Kwenkeu became a United States citizen. A native of Cameroon, Kwenkeu followed his mother to the United States in 2012.
“It was exciting,” he told Philly.com about his citizenship. “It was a five-year long wait and when it finally happened it, there were tears on my mom’s face, she was smiling and it was making her proud. That is what she wanted for me, the America dream happening for me, so it was a very warm moment.”
Oh, he also told the website that when he arrived in the United States that he didn’t know any English. He then self-taught himself the language.
Kwenkeu had a pretty good game on Thursday too. As Temple won 28-3, Kwenkeu had six tackles and two sacks. Those sacks were the sophomore’s first two of the season and he finishes 2017 with 34 total tackles. As a freshman last season, Kwenkeu had 14 tackles and a fumble recovery.
