The wait for new episodes of Tell Me Lies has been utterly agonizing, but here’s something to soften the edge: Thomas Doherty is joining the ensemble!

The Gossip Girl graduate will recur as Leo, a junior at Baird who “returns to campus after studying abroad for a year and is immediately drawn to Lucy (played by Grace Van Patten),” Deadline reports. Despite his charming personality, Lucy isn’t sure she can fully trust him just yet, and he eventually finds himself caught up in her messy romance with Stephen (Jackson White).

The upcoming season will be a tale of two Toms given that, as previously reported, Lucifer’s Tom Ellis is set to portray Oliver, a professor at Baird College and the husband of Lucy’s English instructor Marianne (Gabriella Pession), whose influence over one of the show’s core characters has “chaotic repercussions.”

The cast of the provocative series — which streamed Season 1 on Hulu back in September and October 2022 — announced in January that production on Season 2 had finally begun. See below for photos of the reunited crew, which includes stars Grace Van Patten, Catherine Missal and Sonia Mena.

Based on the book by Carola Lovering, the show centers on the toxic relationship between Lucy Albright (Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (White), who met at a college party in 2007. Unfolding over eight years, the story follows the pair’s descent into an addictive entanglement and how their friends are caught up in their web of lies and deception.

Season 1 ended with Stephen dumping Lucy to get back together with his ex-girlfriend Diana in 2008 and showing up to Bree’s engagement party with her childhood friend Lydia as his date in 2015.

“It’s really been interesting seeing the audience response to Lucy, and seeing how people have been almost as angry at her as they are with Stephen,” Meaghan Oppenheimer, Tell Me Lies’ creator and showrunner, previously told TVLine. “I don’t think that Lucy is as naturally manipulative as Stephen, but I think that what happens when you’re in a relationship like this is the behavior starts to seep over and you start to give what you’re getting. You start to learn the survival tools that the other person is using.”

As for Season 2, Oppenheimer noted that there were “many more breakups and getting back together and breaking up again” that happened after the events of Season 1. “I think it would be really fun to explore all that,” she said.

A release date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
