Teen pronounced dead after vehicle goes into water at Lake Cumberland boat ramp

A 17-year-old boy from Somerset has died after a vehicle went into the water at Lake Cumberland Friday night.

Russell County Coroner Mark Coots said Cameron Powell was pronounced dead at the scene at the Clifty Creek Boat Ramp at 9:25 p.m.

The Jamestown Fire Department and Dive Team said two people were in the car when the vehicle went into the water, but one was able to get out. A Russell County sheriff’s deputy went into the water to try to get the other person, later identified as Powell, but was not successful, the fire department said in a Facebook post. The fire department and dive team were called to the boat ramp at 9:02 p.m. and were able to remove Powell’s body, the post stated.

Powell’s body was being taken to the Office of the State Medical Examiner in Frankfort for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, the coroner said.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officers and the coroner’s office are conducting the investigation, Coots said.
