Teen Arrested in Fatal Shooting of 10-Year-Old D.C. Girl Who Was in Car with Family on Mother’s Day

More than four months after a 10-year-old girl was killed in a shooting in Washington, D.C., authorities have arrested a man on accusations of murder.

On Sept. 18, Koran Gregory, 19, was taken into custody on a charge of first-degree murder while armed in connection with the death of 10-year-old Arianna Davis, the Metropolitan Police Department announced in a press release.

It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

According to police, Arianna was struck by a stray bullet on May 14 — Mother’s Day — while riding in a car with her family in Northeast Washington. She died at a local hospital three days later on May 17, authorities said.

Police praised the public for providing tips that led detectives to identify Gregory as the suspect.

According to a GoFundMe page launched by loved ones, Arianna was a 5th grader who was set to graduate earlier this year and begin middle school in the fall.

"To know Ari, was to know a sweet and loving child with a beautiful smile that could light up any room,” reads the campaign, created on behalf of the girl’s mother, Antionette Belk, a teacher in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

During Davis’ funeral, which took place several weeks after her death, a man was fatally shot, PEOPLE previously reported, citing police in Prince George’s County, Md. The victim, 30-year-old Ronald Steven Banks, was reportedly a pallbearer at the girl’s burial service.

In a press release on June 7, the Prince George’s County Police Department announced the arrest of Wilson Chavis, 48, who is accused of killing Banks and wounding another person.

Police said Chavis, who owns the funeral service company that was providing the 10-year-old’s burial service, confronted Banks and another person, both of whom he has a “long-standing business dispute" with.

“Several funeral attendees became upset with Chavis and confronted him over his behavior,” the release states. “The preliminary investigation suggests Chavis pulled out a gun and fired two shots, striking both victims.”

Chavis was arrested following a traffic stop, police said. He is charged with first and second-degree murder, attempted first and second-degree murder, and other shooting-related offenses.

It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to comment on his behalf.

“The death of Arianna was a senseless tragedy,” said Pamela A. Smith, Acting Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department. “The Metropolitan Police Department extends our deepest condolences to Arianna’s family, and we hope this arrest helps bring some semblance of peace.”

“Community support was invaluable during this investigation,” she continued. “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who assisted in bringing this case to justice.”

Authorities are still searching for more suspects they believe are involved in the deadly shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a $45,000 reward to anyone who may have information leading to an arrest and conviction.
