Throughout her journey of ups and downs, Mellencamp has been keeping her followers in-the-know every step of the way in the hopes of inspiring others to get skin checks.

Shortly after her last surgery two weeks ago, the podcast host shared a series of Instagram Stories and some posts that documented the surgery to have her 13th melanoma removed.

"I'm out of surgery. Now I’m just waiting to be discharged to the nursing facility,” she said in a Story video. “It’s pretty painful but I am so grateful that they did such a great job. That back skin is tight. Struggle bus, but I’m hoping they got it all.”

In a post to update everyone, she explained what surgery entailed.

"I specifically went through a “wide excision melanoma, soft tissue defect reconstruction with adjacent tissue rearrangement.” Basically they cut out the area of my shoulder and replaced it with a flap of skin from below on my back (swipe to see the area before surgery). But the pain and discomfort are all worth it," she wrote.

"Please get your skin checked. I promise you do not want to go through this."

Every update she's shared, many fans and followers left supportive comments for her thanked her for her transparency, and shared their own experiences.

"As a survivor of stage 3 in nearly the same spot, I applaud your determination! 22 years later no melanoma. Twice yearly full body checks have kept me clean, though have had many basil and squamous, so keep vigilant!" one person wrote in the comments of an update post.

Another person shared her experience, "Yes yes yes!! Get your skin checked. This spring my 17-year-old daughter was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. It was a spot on her skin that just kept growing. She underwent surgery and a skin graft. Don't think it can't happen to you. They had to check 4 of my daughter's lymph nodes as well. Thankfully she is doing well and was discharged 5 days before her graduation ceremony! Sending you prayers."
