Teacher Whose Handshakes Have Gone Viral Joins ‘Today’

A North Carolina teacher and handshake aficionado Barry White Jr. joined the Today show on Thursday. White has become an Internet sensation since video surfaced of him giving each one of his students personalized, awesome handshakes. White said he got the idea after watching Lebron James do personalized handshakes with his teammates. But it all really got started at the school, thanks to one student in particular.

“It started with a fourth-grade student last year. She used to wait outside my door in the morning. And she would get in trouble for being late. Teachers [would] say, ‘Come on. The bell’s ringing.’ ‘I gotta wait for Mr. White. I gotta do my handshake.’ And it was just so powerful, just so simple. So I decided: I’m gonna bring that feeling to my whole entire grade,” White said.

White has gotten so popular with the kids, they stop him in the lunchroom or at recess just to do a handshake.
