Teacher shocks parents with inflammatory Christmas party invite: 'This is definitely not acceptable'

An elementary school teacher is drawing outrage from both parents and administrators after a list of rules for a class holiday party went viral on social media.

Takaria Scott, whose daughter, Sariah, purportedly attends a school in Mississippi's Meridian Public School District, shared a photo of the controversial message to her Facebook page earlier this month.

The letter, which seemed to be informing parents of an upcoming class party, listed the event's date and the snacks Sariah had agreed to bring. But the message also contained a crucial, bolded note.

"My philosophy is: if they don't bring anything, they don't eat anything," the unnamed teacher's warning read.

Scott shared her frustrations with the rule, which required children to bring food if they wanted to join in on the festivities.

"Now for these kids to be between 6-7yrs this should not be a philosophy. Kids are kids man. This is definitely not acceptable in my eyes," Scott wrote in her post, which has been shared more than 6,500 times as of Friday afternoon.

The post drew thousands of angry responses, with many calling the teacher "horrible" or "a monster" for putting stipulations on a child's ability to eat and participate. Outrage around the rule soon made its way to the school district, which sent a letter to parents that Scott shared on Facebook.

In the letter, the district's superintendent, Amy J. Carter, apologized for the rule and condemned the teacher's actions, promising that "no student will be made to feel uncomfortable" if they didn't bring food to the party.

"Our students should know that the moment they come to school, that they are in an environment where they are nurtured by their teacher," Carter added.

Still, Scott was not totally happy with the school's handling of the situation, noting that the letter never specified whether the teacher was disciplined for their actions.

"I’m not completely satisfied about the [school’s] response because I’m not sure something happened to the teacher," Scott told Scary Mommy. "I appreciate everyone who reached out in this matter. I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else’s child."
