Taylor Swift Releasing New Album folklore Tonight

Taylor Swift will release a new album, folklore, at midnight Eastern tonight (July 23). She announced the surprise Lover follow-up without fanfare this morning via Instagram. The album’s 16 tracks feature no pre-release singles. The National’s Aaron Dessner co-wrote or produced 11 tracks, and Bon Iver co-wrote and sings on one; the National’s Bryce Dessner also penned orchestration on the LP, according to the band’s Twitter account. Other collaborators include Jack Antonoff and William Bower. “Most of the things I had planned this summer didn’t end up happening, but there is something I hadn’t planned on that DID happen,” she wrote of the record. See her full announcement below, along with the album art and tracklist.

A video that Swift wrote and directed (with social-distancing measures) for new song “cardigan” will come out tonight. A bonus track called “the lakes” will appear on deluxe physical editions of the album, Swift wrote on Instagram.

On his Instagram, Aaron Dessner wrote, “I was excited and honored when Taylor approached me in late April about maybe writing some songs remotely together.” He continued, “I thought it would take a while for song ideas to come and I had no expectations as far as what we could accomplish remotely. But a few hours after sharing music, my phone lit up with a voice memo from Taylor of a fully written version of a song—the momentum never really stopped. Over the next few months, we remotely finished 11 songs (She also recorded several others with the amazing [Jack Antonoff]) of her magical new album ‘folklore.’ I’ve rarely been so inspired by someone and it’s still hard to believe this even happened—these songs came together in such a challenging time.” Find Dessner’s note below.

A live album released without Swift’s clearance was released this year; read “That ‘New’ Taylor Swift Live Album Feels Like the Unauthorized Cash Grab It Is” on the Pitch.
