Taylor Swift’s new album, The Tortured Poets Department, has arrived. Update: Swift has released a surprise double album version of The Tortured Poets Department, featuring 15 new songs.

First announced onstage at the 2024 Grammy Awards in February, The Tortured Poets Department is Swift’s 11th studio album, and the first original release to arrive since the launch of her historic “Eras Tour” last year. Spanning 16 songs, it was written by Swift along with frequent collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, and features appearances by Post Malone and Florence + the Machine.

Speaking about it onstage during a recent stop of the “Eras Tour,” Swift, our 2023 Artist of the Year, explained that the album reminded her “why songwriting is something that actually gets me through my life.” Emphasizing the imperative feelings of creativity she had, she said “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on Tortured Poets.”

In a statement Swift posted at midnight when the album dropped, she described it as “an anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.”

Continuing, she wrote, “This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it… and then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”

Now, the album has arrived via Republic Records in all of its glory (with the Post Malone track “Fortnight” getting recognition as the “lead single”). In addition to being available on vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital formats, the album was also offered in a few collector’s edition varieties, which each included unique bonus songs (titled “The Bolter,” “The Albatross,” and “The Black Dog”). Currently, physical copies of the album with the bonus track “The Manuscript” are available on Swift’s website.

For those who got physical editions of Tortured Poets, they saw the album’s thematic opener: a poem by Stevie Nicks, dated August 13th, 2023, in Austin, Texas. With the note “For T and me…” the poem describes an ill-fated romance, with lines like “He was in love with her/ Or at least she thought so/ She was brokenhearted/ Maybe he was too… She looked back from her future/ And shed a few tears/ He looked into his past/ And actually felt fear.”
