Taylor Swift Performs 4 Back-to-Back Eras Tour Shows in Tokyo Ahead of Super Bowl

Fans hope the superstar will attend the Sunday game to cheer on boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs

Fans in Tokyo were “enchanted” by Taylor Swift on four-consecutive nights during her latest Eras Tour run, which began Wednesday and wrapped on Saturday at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.

The shows went as all Eras Tours gigs have so far, with sections of the setlist dedicated to each Swift album and even a few surprise songs thrown into the mix — this time including “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” “Superman,” a live debut of “Dear Reader” and others during the four nights.

But on Saturday, as the Associated Press notes, some Tokyo Swifties were hoping that the Grammy winner could make it back to the United States in time for Sunday's Super Bowl in Las Vegas, where her boyfriend Travis Kelce and his Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers. “I hope she can return in time. It’s so romantic,” fan Hitomi Takahashi told the outlet.

Swift, who is expected to attend the big game but has not confirmed herself, has attended 12 Chiefs games so far, including the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 29 where she celebrated the Chiefs' victory with Kelce on the field. She and the NFL tight end went public with their relationship in September 2023.

As for her latest stint in Tokyo, Swift expressed her gratitude toward fans for filling up the 55,000-seat venue during the run of shows. “It’s been a while since I’ve gotten to see you,” she told the crowd, per a fan-recorded video shared to X (formerly Twitter) this week.

“We haven’t been here on tour, it’s been over 4 years and I’m so happy to be back with you here tonight at the Eras Tour. Thank you so much for deciding to be here, thank you to anyone who traveled, thank you to anyone who was here tonight. I love you so much.”

During her opening night in Tokyo on Wednesday, Swift also opened up about her upcoming 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, which she announced onstage at last week's Grammys.

“I’ve been working on Tortured Poets since right after I turned in Midnights,” Swift said, as previously reported. “I’ve been working on it for about two years, I kept working on it throughout the U.S. tour and when it was perfect — in my opinion when it’s good enough for you — I finished it and I am so so excited that soon you’ll get to hear it.”

“The Recording Academy decided to give Midnights album of the year,” Swift also added of her latest Grammy triumph. “I just cannot believe you, I cannot thank you enough. This is just the craziest, most joyful experience and then getting to come here and then get to thank you and see you right after that happened, I’m in a really good mood.”

Swift's gigs in Tokyo also included an onstage stumble during the Folklore portion of her Feb. 9 concert. She joked at the time that her “life flashed before my eyes.”

“I almost fell off the Folklore cabin, but I didn’t and that’s the lesson. My life flashed before my eyes, yeah, no, I’m good. It’s all good. Everything’s fine,” she jokingly told the crowd. “Everything’s great! I’m just so happy that I didn’t fall off the folklore cabin, you know what I mean? What a great night in Tokyo!”

Before Swift even touched down in Japan, the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C., let Swifties know that her busy travel schedule shouldn't deter her from a Super Bowl appearance. In a statement, the Embassy noted that Swift could “comfortably” make the trek to Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium in time for kickoff.

“Despite the 12-hour flight and 17-hour time difference, the Embassy can confidently Speak Now to say that if she departs Tokyo in the evening after her concert, she should comfortably arrive in Las Vegas before the Super Bowl begins,” the embassy wrote on social media.

“We know that many people in Japan are excited to experience Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, so we wanted to confirm that anyone concerned can be Fearless in knowing that this talented performer can wow Japanese audiences and still make it to Las Vegas to support the Chiefs when they take the field for the Super Bowl wearing Red,” the statement concluded.

After the big game on Sunday, Swift would have to prep for an additional seven shows in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, from Feb. 16-26.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII, airing on CBS on Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
