Taylor Swift, more stars welcome 2021 with humor and hope: 'Bye 2020, it's been weird'

The dumpster fire of 2020 is over. Bring on 2021!

We can count ourselves lucky to have survived a year that included a global pandemic, an economic downturn and a longer than normal presidential election. And we are not alone.

Celebrities are sharing their farewells to 2020 and their hopes and wishes for 2021.

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar got cheeky and posted exactly how she felt about 2020 on Instagram, writing "Peace out 2020 (I won’t miss you.)"

Taylor Swift summed up the strange state we found ourselves in after a most unusual year, writing on Instagram while inexplicably wearing a bear suit, "bye 2020, it's been weird."

Halle Berry opted for a more mournful look to lay the year to rest, captioning her post "R.I.P. 2020."

Tracee Ellis Ross chose to sing her way into the new year. "It’s nice to look back and be reminded that there was good because whew chile... 2020. What a bizarre and surreal year ...Here’s to a collective sigh and release of what needs to be discarded, dismantled and moved away from as we gather all the good, and move towards a new, better, kinder, safer world. I wish to you to choose joy, be in joy, and enjoy. I love you. Happy New Year!!"

In an earlier post, Ross shared a lighter message, "Leavin’ the shenanigans of 2020 behind! U betta let go of my hair!!!"

Reese Witherspoon "politely" asked 2020 to leave on Twitter writing, "Byeee 2020 don’t let the door hit you on the way out."

During CNN's live New Year's Eve coverage Thursday, actress Alfre Woodard put 2020 into a more positive perspective. "Look what this last year brought us! Your beautiful boys," Woodard said referring to both Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen's sons, Wyatt and Benjamin respectively, were born in 2020.

"We welcome so many precious ones around the world. You know we don't look to sower years to bring us goodness, we bring goodness to each other and 2020 delivered on that account. It showed us just how much goodness and kindness and love and community we are capable of. So no matter what the year, we can flex that and make it a good one."

Jennifer Lopez got teary-eyed during her performances on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" Thursday. "2020 is almost over. We made it. We made it," she said. "If this year taught us anything, it taught us to be grateful for what we do have — to cherish every moment. We lost too many. Too many."

Jada Pinkett Smith looked forward, but with few expectations on her New Year's Instagram post. Rather than focusing on what was, the actress, wearing a bikini, was more mindful and in the moment with her outlook for 2021.

"I welcome you 2021 with open arms. I have no expectations. I’m going to be still and grateful," Pinkett Smith wrote.

Like Smith, singer Pink was mindful and spiritual. The singer gave a shout out to Louise Hay, the late motivational and spiritual speaker and author. "All is well in my world (thank you, Louise Hay) this year, may we all remember that we each own a spiritual toolbox that we can always draw from, like a bottomless well. We are capable of brilliance and light, and love in the face of hatred. Kindness in the face of impatience. Deep breaths people."

Jennifer Garner shared a throwback to a New Year Eve's of past with friends, including Kate Hudson and Reese Witherspoon. The actress is ready to get back to dressing up with friends, "Remember getting dressed up and going out with the ladies? It’s coming, it’s coming! Happy New Year!!" Garner wrote with the throwback hashtag.

Neil Patrick Harris posed by fire to share a video on his Instagram sharing his thoughts on 2020 and for what he is hoping for 2021.

"I just wanted to say Happy New Year. 2020 has been filled with tumult but it has also been filled with an opportunity for reflection and for appreciating what we have and I am incredibly grateful for my health and for my family for you guys. ... May there be more fun to come in '21 and I wish everyone out there a very happy and a very safe and a very exciting new year."

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend kept it short and sweet in one Instagram message (and a little salty in another,) when wishing everyone a new year. "Mom and dad wishing you a happy, healthy and beautiful new year blessed with the purest joys and most positive vibes."
