david d: I work for the Fresno County elections office. Yes we had about 1,000 mail in ballots rejected because the signature on the envelope did not match the signature on the voter's registration. - In theory all of these would have counted had the voter cast their vote in person because at the voting centers we do not match a voters signature to the database of registered voters. We truly don't even know with absolute certainty that the person requesting a ballot at the polls is the person identified in the roster of voters. We don't ask to see an ID of any sort - we simply ask "What is your name and where do you live?" We should be able to ask for proof, and asking people to vote at home and mail in their ballot opens the door to far more abuse -- thee is no guarantee that the ballot is being marked by the person it was mailed to. In my opinion all voting should be done in person, id should be required, and people should have the opportunity to vote in person on more than just election day (in Fresno we had 11 voting centers open for ten days up to and including March 3rd).
