One silly rumor involving Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce caused a huge buzz around a Connecticut town.

On Thursday, unconfirmed reports began swirling on social media, claiming that Swift, 33, and Kelce, 34, were dining at a restaurant in New Canaan called the Elm.

One X (formerly known as Twitter) account called @sports_hub_1 originally posted that the pair were having lunch with the “Karma” singer’s pals, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. The unsubstantiated rumors caused Swift fans to swarm the local eatery, crowding the inside and outside of the restaurant to catch a glimpse.

However, it turns out that a Swift-Kelce dupe were mistaken for the real-life pop superstar and NFL player: a pair of scarecrows dressed up as the two were on a close-by lamppost, Us Weekly was the first to report.

As part of the town’s scarecrow fest competition, the Swift stuffed doll had blonde hair and donned an “I love Taylor” shirt, while the Kelce one wore a number 87 Chiefs jersey.

While this sighting may have been a false alarm, the pair’s budding romance has been heating up at other celebrity hot spots across New York City and Kansas City.

Most recently, the pair was spotted walking hand-in-hand leaving the Waverly Inn, an intimate Greenwich Village restaurant on Oct. 15. The menu of the bespoke restaurant is composed of classic American dishes like Baltimore-style crab cakes, a cheeseburger, a wedge salad, burrata and more.

The two also enjoyed their time together at an afterparty at Catch Steak following the season 49 premiere of Saturday Night Live in New York City on Oct. 14. A source told PEOPLE at the time that the two “were so smiley, they were so happy,” at the dinner, taking time to chat with everyone around them. The source added that the couple was, “going back and forth about what to order, like, ‘Should we get a steak? Should we should get like espresso martinis?’”

Prior to showing up on SNL, the power couple dined at Nobu 57, the Midtown Manhattan location of the popular sushi destination. A source told PEOPLE that Swift and Kelce dined in the private hibachi room with eight other guests. The restaurant, which has locations around the globe, is known for signature dishes like its miso black cod, yellowtail and jalapeno appetizer, and their take on spicy tuna with crispy rice. The source added that Kelce frequents Nobu, usually opting for the toro special.

On Wednesday’s episode of Kelce’s New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce (Presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment) podcast, he opened up about the SNL appearance.

"It was electric to be back in that place. There is just something about being in that room. And being their first episode this season, I had such a freaking blast man," he said.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end added that the pair "showed up at SNL having the idea of going, supporting Ice Spice. Her and Taylor are good friends."

As for his involvement in one of the sketches, which poked fun at what Jason, 35, called "Swift mania in the NFL," Travis admitted, "I don’t even remember what I said, I blacked out. As soon as they queued to me, the entire place erupted, which was very overwhelming."

He added that he walked offstage and wasn't sure if he'd said anything at all. "Everybody was like, 'Yeah, no, you killed it.' And I watched it over and I still don’t really know if I said what I was supposed to."
