Taylor Swift and the Cast of ‘Cats’ Perform ‘Memory’ With Tiny Instruments (Video)

“Cats” will be released in theaters on Friday, and what better way to celebrate than with a rendition of “Memory” featuring the cast of the movie — and tiny instruments that look like they were found in an alley somewhere?

Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Francesca Hayward, Jason Derulo, and James Corden each sang a verse of the iconic song by Andrew Lloyd Webber on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” Oh yeah, and Fallon sang a verse too with complete seriousness and without laughing.

Sadly, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and Rebel Wilson didn’t seem to have gotten the memo.

The backing band was, of course, The Roots, led by Questlove, playing some below-average-sized garbage can lids, with Black Thought on the tuna cans, Kamal Gray on the kids version of a Xylophone, Tuba Gooding Jr. playing a coffee can, plus James Boysner on keys, Captain Kirk playing a small acoustic guitar and Mark on upright bass.

Swift tapped away on a milk bottle, as did Derulo, while Hayward played a paint can and Corden shook some nails in a jar. Hudson’s voice was so big she didn’t need to play anything else.

The film has gotten a mostly negative reaction so far based on the strange half-cat, half-human, heavily CGI’d look to the characters, who inexplicably have human faces and hands but are covered in cat fur and also clothes. It currently has a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
