Tariq, 'The Corn Kid' From TikTok, Named Official 'Corn-Bassador' of South Dakota

The little boy who went viral for his love of corn received a new title over the weekend.

Tariq, known as "The Corn Kid," now has a new title: "South Dakota Corn-Bassador."

The little boy rose to Internet fame after he shared his love of corn in a short interview with the YouTube channel Recess Therapy. The interview was later made viral once more as a song and meme created by The Gregory Brothers on TikTok (the same account responsible for the viral "Chrissy, Wake Up" song sampled from Netflix's Stranger Things).

After Tariq's online success, the state of South Dakota celebrated him–and his love of the starchy vegetable–by inviting him to visit The World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. Officials then surprised him with his new title of South Dakota Corn-Bassador.

"Tariq shared his love of the vegetable corn with Recess Therapy during an interview. This warm and fun, charming video quickly went viral…and we all fell in love with Tariq, affectionately called The Corn Kid, and he was known across the world," Katlyn Svendsen, global media and PR director for South Dakota Department of Tourism, stated in a press release shared with Parade.

Svendsen continued: "So today we're here in the great state of South Dakota at the world's only Corn Palace to be here with you [Tariq], and we welcome you and your family to experience some of South Dakota's finest things.”

The press release also stated: "Governor Kristi Noem issued an Executive Proclamation declaring Sept. 3, 2022 as 'Official Corn-Bassador Tariq Day' in the State of South Dakota followed by the City of Mitchell and Mayor Bob Everson also proclaiming Sept. 3, 2022 as 'Tariq Corn Kid Day.'"

Tariq appeared to have a fantastic time at The World’s Only Corn Palace, and after learning about his new title, he expressed sincere gratitude–to both the adoring people around him and corn, of course.

“Thank you all for being here, and one more thing–cheers to corn!”

Parade is told Tariq also received a personal tour of the facilities, where he learned more about corn and its history.

At the end of the big day, Tariq shared one last statement: “May the best of luck be with you, and have a corntastic day!”
