Former Saturday Night Live castmember Taran Killam does not look back at the show's Donald Trump-hosted episode and remember it fondly.
In an interview with Brooklyn Magazine, the actor, now appearing in Broadway's Hamilton as King George, spoke about starring on 2015's SNL episode with Trump, who he simply labels "a moron."
"It was not fun, and most of the cast and writers were not excited to have him there," said Killam. "I didn't get the feeling that he was excited to be there, and it felt like a move for ratings from both sides."
Though he does call out Drake and Jim Carrey for being some of his heroes who appeared on the show over the years, Killam doesn't count the current president's stint as one of the more positive hosting moments.
"What you see is what you get with him, really," he said. "I mean, there was no big reveal. He struggled to read at the table read, which did not give many of us great confidence. Didn't get the jokes, really. He's just a man who seems to be powered by bluster."
Killam also spoke about directing Arnold Schwarzenegger in his upcoming film, Why We're Killing Gunther, and about the Hamilton show attended by then-Vice President-elect Mike Pence, which was before the actor joined the cast but which he thinks was "well handled."
"I'm very impressed by how the cast handled it," said Killam. "I think what I've learned from the cast is that a lot of the negativity was coming from the audience, and I think it was important for the cast that Mike Pence know that they were glad he came, and glad they had that opportunity to perform for him and to communicate with him, and that all are welcome at Hamilton."
When asked about President Trump's reaction to it, attacking the cast of Hamilton for addressing Pence, Killam said simply: "Yeah, well, the president is a moron."
