Glamour hosted its annual Women of the Year Awards Nov. 7 at the Lincoln Center in New York City, where the magazine honored several women for their illustrious accomplishments, including the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul herself, Mary J. Blige.
The Yonkers rep wore a stunning, green sequined gown as she was honored by best friend Taraji P. Henson, who donned all black to the chic affair. “The first time I heard Mary J. Blige sing…I said, ‘That’s me! That girl is like me. She sounds like me, she is speaking the way my heart speaks.’ I felt seen,” Henson said. “And she wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable. She went ahead and made vulnerability her superpower.”
Blige also nearly came to tears when the youth Sing Harlem Choir performed a medley of her biggest hits, including “Real Love” and “Family Affair.”
“That was amazing,” Blige told the choir after the performance. “Thank you so much.”
After taking a beat to process the evening, Blige told the audience, “I’m speechless” before ditching her pre-written speech to speak from the heart. “To all of you women out there, just keep loving on you—that’s it.”
Other honorees included Millie Bobby Brown, America Ferrera, Brooke Shields, Geena Rocero, Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson, and Selma Blair. Check out photos from the celebratory affair below.
