Tallahassee craft coffee brewer Lucky Goat relaunches cold brew cans

For several weeks on social media, we teased that we had added "bonus deals" to our 2024 TLH Beer Society Membership Card and we'd be releasing them "soon."

Well, "soon" turned from a couple of days into a couple of weeks, but last week, we finally revealed 11 new businesses we added to the card. They included:

Lucky Goat cold brew cans are only sold at the 6 Lucky Goat stores: 5 in Tallahassee, 1 in Valdosta, Georgia.

Cold coffee's in the can

There was one newcomer on that list, Lucky Goat Coffee, we wanted to highlight this week because they're doing something pretty cool we think the local "craft" community is going to like.

Lucky Goat, which is one of the more well-known businesses to ever hail from Tallahassee, started roasting their own beans in 2010. And over the last 14 years, they've expanded from a warehouse, to a storefront, to now six storefronts across the Southeast.

And while everyone knows about their unique coffee blends you can buy to-go, or their creative array of coffee drinks you can have them craft at any of their locations, they have another product they're bringing back this week that all Tallahassee Beer Society members can soon take advantage of: Lucky Goat Cold Brew Cans to-go!

When Lucky Goat signed on to be part of the 2024 TLHBS Membership Card, they wanted to make their perk "beer-y" — despite the fact they don't sell beer (although, it's worth noting that their local coffee beans ARE regularly used in our local breweries' recipes).

So they came up with the idea to give cardholders 10% off all cold brew beverages — including nitro draft, takeout gallons and cold brew cans. But it was that last one that had us most intrigued. So we reached out to Lucky Goat this week to ask them more about it, and here's a few things we learned:

  • Lucky Goat debuted their Classic Cold Gold Brew cans last Summer — and they sold out ridiculously fast. "After a successful limited summertime release last year, we knew this product needed a return in our cafe (immediately)," Lindsey Sheets, Vice President of Lucky Goat Branding, told us.

  • Over 50 local businesses in North Florida and South Georgia currently carry LG cold brew on tap — but the cans are only sold at the 6 Lucky Goat stores (5 in Tallahassee, 1 in Valdosta, Georgia.)

  • The cans are 11 oz. each and sold in 4-packs to-go (just how us craft beer peeps like our to-go drinks!)

  • And LG partnered with a well-known mobile canner (who many of our local breweries have used for years) named Iron Heart Canning. They set up a canning day, come in, hook up their canners, load in the cans and labels, and get-r-done! It's a pretty awesome process if you've never seen it.

A big demand for big flavor

But Lindsey says while Lucky Goat may have underestimated the demand the first time for the Cold Brew Cans to-go, that won't happen again.

"Our Cold Brew Cans first rolled out July last year, on our 13th birthday, as a limited release. After seeing the huge response and love of this product, we strived (over the last 8 months) to perfect it even further and bring it back full time," she said. "(This time) they are not going anywhere, anytime soon."

While we had Lucky Goat for a quick Q&A this week, we — a group that is always looking to learn more about the brewing process of the beer we drink and love — also wanted to dive into the process to make this Cold Brew. So we asked Alex Conley, Head of Education and Product Development at Lucky Goat, what she could tell us about how the magic happens.

"We use a heavy-bodied coffee with rich chocolatey notes to lend a bold iteration of this beloved brewing method. It is made even better by the nitrogen it's infused with on the taps in our cafes," Conley said. "This extra step lends a creaminess to the drink that you wouldn't expect to get from black cold brew. And it's really popular with customers because of its balanced and smooth taste."

We'd love to see the brewing process of this cold brew first-hand! Although, after LG spent 10 years perfecting this recipe, our guess is the TLHBS - nor anyone else - is getting an invite to that top secret process! (It's all good, we'll drown our feelings in Cold Brew)

The craft coffee world

So there ya have it! A little peek into something really cool that one of the proud supporters of the TLHBS Membership Card — which benefits the Leon County Humane Society every year — is working on right now.

And we plan more columns like this when any of these 85-plus local businesses on the card have something significant to report that we think our #TLHBeerFam will like! (Look for a story on Forgotten Coast Brewing's opening in Mexico Beach soon!)

We're certainly proud to welcome an iconic local brand like Lucky Goat into the fold in 2024 — and Lindsey told us this week that they were equally thrilled to be asked,

"We are ecstatic to be a part of the 2024 TLH Beer Society Membership Program!" Lindsey said. "From tasting profiles, to sourcing the best green coffee, to perfecting recipes, the craft coffee world is quite similar to the craft beer world, and we are excited to be a part of something that bridges the gap! Cheers to enjoying great coffee (…and beer!) with friends!"

Cheers to that!
