All four members of Talking Heads appeared on Wednesday’s episode of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert as part of their reunion surrounding the 40th anniversary theatrical re-release of Stop Making Sense.

In introducing the band, Stephen Colbert spoke about his own fandom. “I was in my sophomore year of college. That summer before… Speaking in Tongues comes out. That spring, Stop Making Sense comes out. So I am absolutely levitating talking to you right now,” Colbert remarked.

“I had tickets to see you at UVA in Fall 1983,” Colbert continued. “I had a paper due the next day for my Shakespeare class and I did the paper instead. Tina [Weymouth], how big of a mistake did I make?”

During the three-segment interview, Weymouth, David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison discussed their formation and early days of touring, including a show at a pizza shop in which a fire eater opened for them. Frantz also recounted seeing Ramones at CBGBs, while Harrison discussed how he put together the ensemble of backing musicians who appeared in Stop Making Sense.

Toward the end of the segment, Colbert asked the question on everyone’s mind: is a Talking Heads reunion concert in the future? The late-night host even went as far to point out that they could borrow the instruments of his house band. “You got to admit it would be legendary if you got up there right now and played a song. It would be epic! ” Colbert exclaimed. As the crowd responded in cheers, Weymouth leaned into Colbert and said, “You’ll be still waiting,” in an apparent reference to Talking Heads’ song “Crosseyed and Painless.”

The sit-down on Colbert marked only the second time Talking Heads have reunited publicly in 2023 following the Toronto International Film Festival screening of Stop Making Sense in September. In an interview with Kyle Meredith, Harrison admitted that revisiting the Jonathan Demme concert film has been a “healing experience” for the group.

The Stop Making Sense re-release also coincided with a remastered and expanded anniversary edition of the soundtrack.

Elsewhere, the movie topped our list of the 25 Best Concert Films of All Time.
