Takk McKinley was going to pay $3,000 for a lock of his own hair

So here’s a strange one: Atlanta Falcons defensive end Takk McKinley recently found himself bidding on eBay to buy his own hair.

The backstory: McKinley, a rookie best known for professing his love for his late grandmother on draft night, lost one of his dreadlocks during Week 3’s victory over the Detroit Lions. Someone picked it up, put it on eBay, and then all hell broke loose … well, sort of.

“I honestly thought I was going to buy it for like $20,” McKinley said, per ESPN. “When I saw it was $1 and $5 shipping, I was like, ‘Man, that don’t make no sense.’ Then I tweeted about it, and it went to $50. Then $100. And then I’m like, ‘What the heck is going on?’ Then it got to the thousands. Then $5,000. The final [total] was like $11,000. And I was like, ‘You know what? Nobody’s going to outbid me. I’m getting my hair back.’ I thought about it. But once it got to $11,000, I was like, ‘Man, y’all can have that hair.'”

How high would he have gone? Probably “about $3,000,” McKinley said. Alas, eBay doesn’t permit the sale of body parts, as you’d know if you tried to fence a kidney on it. (Come on, we can’t be the only ones.) So the listing was removed and the sale was canceled. Alas.

McKinley wasn’t surprised that the dreadlock fell out, since he said he hasn’t had his hair done since July. So keep your eyes open, Falcons fans. A one-of-a-kind collectible could be coming your way soon.
