When Consequence asks writer/director/actor Taika Waititi if he’s feeling optimistic about a third season of Our Flag Means Death, his initial response is this: “Have you seen the end?”
Season 2 of the period pirate comedy, fans will remember, concluded with Ed, the pirate formerly known as Blackbeard (Waititi) and his beloved Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) diving into the renovations on an inn back on land, while their ragtag companions sail off into the literal sunset.
Max has yet to announce plans for a third season but Our Flag Means Death has become a fan favorite for its loving portrayal of its core relationship between Ed and Stede. For Waititi, though, the Season 2 finale “feels like a natural end to their story. Just because I feel like, you know, they’ve been through so much and then wind up in that nice place at a happy ending.”
Waititi calls Our Flag Means Death “a really special show,” adding that “I love the show so much and maybe it can survive without Rhys and I. Maybe, I don’t know. I do I think the character of Blackbeard is something I’m really proud of.”
Waititi says, though, that “I don’t want it to feel like Rambo III suddenly, you know, when you’re like, ‘Oh man, they have to leave their idyllic life again.'”
This fall, series creator David Jenkins told Consequence that for him, the series felt like a three-season show, saying that “you can tell the story in three seasons and get a full sense of a relationship: A couple first understanding love in the first season, then to a relationship that’s a little more mature, and they’re learning what to do with that love.” A third season, then, would focus on Stede and Edward “learning how to keep and hang onto that love as it gets more mature.”
However, Jenkins also acknowledged that three seasons would be the limit if only due to Waititi’s schedule, as “I feel like that’s about as long as you can hang on to somebody who’s directing 50 things at once.”
Waititi’s newest film, Next Goal Wins, just debuted in theaters, and on the horizon he’s behind (among other things) a fresh take on Time Bandits debuting soon on Apple TV+, a series adaptation of the novel Interior Chinatown for Hulu, and a years-in-development Star Wars adventure. Whatever he might direct, though, be sure that he’ll also be acting in it.
