Tahereh Mafi talks 'Unravel Me,' sequel to 'Shatter Me'

Devour Me. That should be the name of Tahereh Mafi’s Unravel Me (out now). And not because the story has anything to do with food consumption—it doesn’t—but because once you start the sequel to 2011’s Shatter Me, you won’t be able to put it down. Here, author Mafi (who responded to a few of my burning questions via e-mail) won’t admit whether she’s Team Adam or Team Warner, but she does tease what’s next in the series.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I really loved Unravel Me. In fact, I liked it more than Shatter Me. Is that a good thing to hear, that someone likes book two better?

TAHEREH MAFI: Aww thank you so much! It actually makes me super happy to hear that people are enjoying the second book more than the first. It can mean nothing but good things. I think, as an author, you always want your readers to be more excited about what’s to come.

There wasn’t much of a love triangle in Shatter Me, but things really heat up with the Juliette and Warner in Unravel Me. Is that something you planned from the beginning?

Hahaha…yeah.

I find myself rooting for Warner. So fess up, are you Team Adam or Team Warner?

I don’t know! I’m not really into sports.

What can you tell fans about book three?

I’ve never loved Juliette more than I do in the third book. She’s grown so so much, and she’s so strong. She’s everything I hoped she would become when I first met that scared, skittish girl in the first book. Also: lots and lots of action and lots and lots of kissing.

Can you share the book three name yet?

There isn’t one! My mom keeps trying to convince me to call it Unshackle Me, and she doesn’t understand why I can’t stop laughing.

Does it have a release date?

As far as I know, February 2014.

When Shatter Me debuted, the film rights had been sold. Are there any developments on that front?

I’ve had a couple of meetings with Fox, and they were really wonderful and exciting. But who knows? Fingers crossed!

Destroy Me came out between Shatter Me and Unravel Me. Are there plans for more novellas from other character’s perspectives?

Yes! I haven’t told anyone this yet, but yes. Details soon.

Anything else you want to add about the series or Unravel Me specifically?

Yes: I had a lot of fun writing chapter 62.

Do you already have your copy of Unravel Me? Are you as excited as I am for the third and final installment of the Shatter Me trilogy? Sound off in the comments.
