“I think Miley's more of an ally than, say, Katy Perry, who most definitely panders to the gay community,” says Sharon Needles, before reciting some of Perry’s more offensive lyrics.
Sharon Needles is the great Gothic scream queen of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the supernaturally cool Season 4 winner who during her victory speech uttered one of the show’s most genius lines: “If anyone boos you offstage, that is simply applause from ghosts.”
Only at Beach Goth — a dizzyingly diverse festival curated by Orange Country garage/surf/psych band the Growlers, and featuring everyone from Bon Iver and James Blake to Tricky, TSOL, and even TLC — would the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race fit right in. So it was there, on Saturday at the Observatory in Santa Ana, Calif., that Drag Race divas Adore Delano, Ginger Minj, Sharon Needles, and Alaska 5000 — all singing live — donned some day drag and made their proper, official rock festival debut.
Sharon Needles, the Season 4 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is one of many Drag Race alumni flooding the marketplace with original music – most recently with her sophomore album, Taxidermy. “I’m more Courtney Love than Courtney Act,” Sharon jokes, rocking a stained G.G. Allin T-shirt and Blade Runner/Adam Ant warpaint, and a Pete Burns wig, as she visits Yahoo Music to publicly perform stripped-down, so to speak, for the very first time. All of these elements (except maybe Britney) are evident on Taxidermy, a darker, more personal, and more somber work that veers away from the campy, clubby sound of Sharon’s debut album, PG-13.
