The numbers “4:44” have been mysteriously appearing on billboards and online ads in Los Angeles and New York, as well as banner ads on websites including Complex.com, Fader, and Hypebeast. Fans went into overdrive assuming the numbers were code for Jay Z’s upcoming album because the word “Tidal” appeared at the bottom of some of the ads. Tidal is a subscription-based streaming service that Jay Z is a lead investor in, along with other musical artists.
Sunday’s 89th Academy Awards was a major night for the cast and crew of Moonlight. Mahershala Ali won Best Supporting Actor, writer-director Barry Jenkins and co-writer Tarell Alvin McCraney won Best Adapted Screenplay, and, in that crazy moment, the film won Best Picture. The wins were historic as Ali is the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar, Moonlight is the first ever LGBT+ film to win Best Picture, and Jenkins was the first African-American writer-director ever to be nominated for Best Director.
The Best Picture mistake heard round the world was just one of many memorable moments from the 89th Academy Awards. In one of the most shocking moments in the history of the Oscars, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway incorrectly announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner. It’s easy to see now that there was a problem as Beatty fumbled with the envelope and delayed the announcement, but at the time, everyone assumed he was just joking around.
