Taco Bell is ready to admit that they made a mistake.

On Thursday, the popular fastfood chain announced that it would be bringing back their potatoes — beloved by those looking for a vegetarian option — after originally cutting them from the menu last year.

Both the Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes and the Spicy Potato Soft Taco will return to the menu permanently starting March 11.

"The return of our beloved potatoes is just the first step in showing our fans the strong continued commitment to vegetarian we are making this year," Liz Matthews, Taco Bell's Global Chief Food Innovation Officer, said in a statement. "We have long been a leader in the vegetarian space, but this year, we have more meatless options in store that vegetarians, veggie-curious and even meat-eaters will love."

Not only are they bringing back potatoes, but they've also teamed up with Beyond Meat to create an "innovative new plant-based protein that will be tested in the next year."

Taco Bell first announced in July 2020 that potatoes, among other items, would be cut from the menu as they looked to simplify operations amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"With safety top of mind, we want to ensure an easy and fast ordering experience for our guests and team members," they said at the time. "While some old favorites may be retiring, the continued creativity coming from our Food Innovation Team is non-stop."

They added, "And while change is hard, a simplified menu and innovation process will leave room for new fan favorites, continued progress in categories such as plant-based diets, and even opportunities for the return of some classics on a limited-time basis."

Customers expressed their outrage for the cuts on social media. "Taco bell getting rid of potatoes is worse than my parents' divorce," one user shared on Twitter.

Another user added, "I don't think I can forgive Taco Bell for taking potatoes off their menu."

One disgruntled customer even created an online petition for people to protest the menu cuts. It amassed over 5,000 signatures.

"Taco Bell has long been one of the most vegetarian friendly fast food chains, cutting these items will diminish the options given to vegetarians and strip dedicated fans and customers of their favorite meals," Amaury Barberi wrote in the petition.

After Taco Bell announced the return of their potatoes, several customers rejoiced on Twitter.

"If you need some good news to get you going today, taco bell is bringing back potatoes and expanding their vegetarian menu in march. bless," one user wrote.
