SZA Celebrates 'SOS' Anniversary and Begins Teasing New Project 'Lana': 'I Haven't Processed This Year at All'

The R&B superstar's second studio album celebrated its first anniversary on Dec. 9

Only good days have been in SZA’s mind since the release of SOS.

The R&B superstar’s Grammy-nominated album SOS celebrated its one-year anniversary on Dec. 9, and she posted to Instagram to celebrate the major milestones that she's reached since its release.

In the caption of a post featuring the SOS album artwork, she opened up about how thrilling the past year has been and how she still struggles to grasp the amount of accolades her sophomore studio album has received.

“a day late but Happy 1 year anniversary to an album that is ACTIVELY CHANGING MY LIFE .. like rn currently changing my life,” the “Kill Bill” singer, 34, began her post. “I haven’t processed this year AT ALL cause it’s still happening. this is beyond my wildest dreams . I never imagined we’d accomplish a fraction of the accolades that came from this.”

She continued by referring to how overwhelming the new levels of fame she's reached have been at times. “it often doesn’t feel real and it’s funny cause I swore I’d know what to do if it ever happened 😂 turns out I I froze .. I know the perils of drinking the koolaid so I won’t dabble,” the hitmaker wrote.

“but I have to express the immense GRATITUDE I have for every person that made this possible . Every person that’s been apart of this journey,” the singer (whose real name is Solána Imani Rowe). “Thank you to GOD and to my incredible TEAM and My FAMILY . My ancestors . Thank you to every person that streamed this album ,came to a show , blasted it in traffic and connected w ANY part of me.”

The post concluded with a sweet note: “To everyone that continues to believe in me and be patient w me as I figure it all out . [you're] my driving force . I love you 🫶🏾💗 #campforever #SOSFOREVER”

SZA dropped the highly anticipated follow-up to her 2017 breakout debut, Ctrl, in late 2022. The project received widespread acclaim upon its release and spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Several tracks charted on the Billboard Hot 100, including the hit “Kill Bill,” which peaked at No. 1.

For much of 2023, she promoted the release out on the road on her first-ever arena tour.

The “Snooze” singer has since garnered a whopping nine Grammy nominations for her efforts on SOS — making her the most-nominated artist at the 66th Grammy Awards. The project is competing in the coveted album of the year category and the single “Kill Bill” is up for both song and record of the year, among other nominations.

Even though the singer-songwriter is still relishing in the success of her 2022 album, she's also begun teasing her next project, Lana. Shortly after making her anniversary post on Instagram, SZA shared six variations of album artwork for the upcoming, undated release.

Three of the shots feature images of her in baggy jeans and a jersey on a farm next to horses, pigs and chickens. Meanwhile, the other options show her posing on a chair wearing a sweet white ensemble and loafers, in a field shrouded in greenery and in the midst of undressing in a tent.

The star first announced Lana at a special Brooklyn concert in September, explaining to the audience at the time that she had plans to release a deluxe version of SOS with upwards of seven to 10 new songs.

More recently, she's expressed that Lana has become something bigger than a deluxe, updating Variety about its timeline in a late November interview.

"It was gonna be [SOS] outtakes and some new songs, but it’s become more than I expected,” SZA told the outlet. “It was gonna be really soft, because I had made all my screaming points, and I just wanted to glide and not think [too much] and get out of my own head — I was so happy to say some s--- that didn’t mean a f---ing thing.

She added, “It’s definitely turning into its own album… and I guess I could drop a new album randomly, because no one’s actually expecting that from me right now.”
