The Sympathizer Trailer Previews HBO Spy Series Starring Robert Downey Jr.

HBO has released a new The Sympathizer trailer teasing the upcoming spy thriller series from legendary director Park Chan-wook and starring Robert Downey Jr.

The latest trailer for the series dives deeper into the world of spycraft as star Hoa Xuande joins up with Robert Downey Jr. to begin a career as a spy. Alongside Xuande and Downey, The Sympathizer also stars Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Vy Le, and Ky Duyen, and Sandra Oh.

The series is set to premiere on HBO and Max on April 14, 2024.

What is The Sympathizer about?

“Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Sympathizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over,” reads the series’ synopsis.

The Sympathizer stars Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey Jr. with Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, and Sandra O. It is a co-production between HBO, A24, and Rhombus Media in association with Cinetic Media and Moho Film.

Park Chan-wook serves as co-showrunner, director, writer, and executive producer, while Don McKellar serves as co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Robert Downey Jr. also executive produces alongside Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, Niv Fichman, Kim Ly, Ron Schmidt, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Jisun Back.
