Sydney Sweeney Says Grandmas Were 'So Excited' at “Immaculate ”Premiere After Cameoing as Nuns in Horror Movie

"I flew them to Italy, and they got to come visit me on set. I made them extras as nuns," the actress said

Immaculate was a family affair for Sydney Sweeney.

The actress appeared on the Today show Wednesday to chat about the new horror film, including how her grandmothers made appearances both in the movie and at the Los Angeles premiere alongside her.

"I flew them to Italy, and they got to come visit me on set. I made them extras as nuns," said Sweeney, 26. "And then I brought them to the premiere in L.A. They were just so excited."

In Immaculate, Sweeney stars as Cecilia, a nun who witnesses an ominous "miracle," as it's referred to in the trailer that debuted in January.

"It's a challenging character; it's an interesting story. I loved the horror genre. It's exciting," she told Today about the film, noting Immaculate is dark, boundary-pushing and unlike anything she's done before.

It also ends in a way the Anyone But You actress noted might leave viewers polarized.

"I think that there's going to be a mixed reaction, and I like that. I like where movies or endings create a discussion, a debate. I think that it's going to be a wild ride for some people," she said. "We like to push the limits. We wanted to go to some places."

The movie's climax will also show audiences something they haven't seen from Sweeney before: a single take that they did "fresh."

"The last scene of the movie was one take and you guys see the first take that we did," she shared. "I don't like to plan things out, I like to feel things organically."

"And for my character Cecilia, she was going through so much anger, pain, freedom, fear. And when we were blocking the cameras, our director, Michael Mohan, was like, 'Do you want to rehearse it?' And I was like, 'Let's just see what happens.' And that's what happened," Sweeney added.

Cecilia is "an American nun of devout faith, embarking on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside," according to a synopsis.

"Cecilia’s warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors," the synopsis adds.

In addition to starring in the film, Sweeney also produced Immaculate. It also marks a reunion between her and Mohan, who helmed 2021's The Voyeurs with the actress.

Immaculate costars fellow White Lotus actress Simona Tabasco — she appeared in season 2, while Sweeney starred in season 1 — as well as Álvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano and Giorgio Colangeli.
