Sweet treats, sandwiches and so much more: 6 new Memphis restaurants you need to try

July was a busy month for new restaurants in Memphis — especially for those specializing in sweet treats.

Four new sweets shops opened — serving everything from macarons to banana pudding to Italian ice to peach cobbler.

For those craving something more savory, there is also a new breakfast spot in town as well as a new location for a popular sub shop.

Here is a closer look at the six Memphis restaurants that opened during July.

Primas Bakery

You no longer have to drive Downtown to get a sweet treat from Primas Bakery.

Primas Bakery + Boutique has moved from its Downtown location in the South Main Arts District to East Memphis. The new location is at 734 Mt. Moriah opened June 30.

Owner Rachel Mullen, who recently was featured on Food Network’s “Spring Baking Championship: Easter,” is known for her intricate piping work and the vibrant colored treats. Signature items include her cookie cakes, macarons and custom cakes.

“We want to be centrally located,” she said of the reason for the move.

The move also offers more space. Mullen said her bakery and her cousin Angelique Sloan’s boutique will now be separate businesses located side by side.

For her bakery, Mullen said the new space will allow for more grab-and-go bakery items, more seating as well as a dedicated space for the popular birthday parties and cake decorating classes she hosts.

Hours: 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday; 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Sunday. Closed Monday.

Elise Dessert Co.

3536 Walker Ave.; elisedessertco.com

Bria Woods opened a retail shop for her popular line of Elise Dessert Co. banana puddings and sweet treats on July 1. Near the University of Memphis, the new shop at 3526 Walker Ave. is tucked away in the shopping center that is home to Garibaldi’s Pizza.

All her flavors of puddings — Original Banana, Cookie, Strawberry Banana, Caramel and Cookies & Cream — can be purchased in a 16-ounce tub or in a special order half-sheet pan that feeds 10. Eight-ounce packaging is reserved for retail grocery stores (including Kroger, Cordelia’s Market, High Point Grocery and South Point Grocery) that carry her puddings.

In addition to pudding, she is also selling her signature Key Lime Pie by the slice or as a whole pie. Local vendor products — such as Beneva Mayweather Cinnamon Rolls and Makeda’s Butter Cookies — are also available for purchase.

The new shop also serves as her own commercial kitchen, enabling her the opportunity to further grow her brand that launched in 2020.

Hours: 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday; 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Friday-Saturday.

Eggs Up Grill

Eggs Up Grill, a 25-plus-year-old breakfast, brunch and lunch concept, opened a new restaurant in Germantown on July 8. Located at 9155 Poplar Ave., the restaurant is the first of three Eggs Up Grill restaurants in development in the Memphis area. Dana McCubbin is the franchisee in partnership with Roseann Heckendorf and Wayland Rice.

"What we are bringing to the community is much more than breakfast, it’s a faith-based culture and experience of family and community like no other,” McCubbin said. “Our goal is to enrich the lives of those around us, make customers feel like family and serve the best breakfast, brunch and lunch in town.”

With indoor seating for 144, the 3,600-square-foot restaurant is designed to make guests feel at home in a light, bright and cheery atmosphere. Online ordering, takeout, catering and delivery options are available.

The Peach Cobbler Factory

Otis and Janie Jackson, along with their daughter Janell Jackson, opened their second location of The Peach Cobbler Factory on July 15 at 5101 Sanderlin Ave. Their first location of the franchise opened in October 2022 at 930-2 West Poplar Ave. in Collierville.

The Peach Cobbler Factory is known for its wide assortment of freshly baked cobblers, banana puddings and cinnamon rolls.

Expect to find 12 flavors of cobblers, 12 flavors of banana puddings and six flavors of cinnamon rolls.

Cobblers are baked fresh daily and come in flavors like Mango Peach, Apple Walnut Raisin and Sweet Potato Pecan.  Served warm in 8-ounce cups, guests have the option of ordering them with a scoop of ice cream on the side.

Banana pudding offerings range from a classic Southern banana pudding with vanilla wafers to a version  swirled with Nutella to a Cherry Swirl with plump orchard cherries.

Oversized cinnamon rolls come in six flavors and can even be “stuffed” with your favorite cobbler.

Signature beverages like Sweet Peachy Tea, Cold Rush Cold-brew Coffee and Strawberry Milk are available to wash down your sweet treat.

The Jackson family plans to open additional locations in Germantown, Cordova and Midtown.

Jersey Mike’s Subs

On July 19, Jersey Mike’s Subs opened a new location in Memphis at 7801 Winchester Road.

“We are so grateful for the warm welcome we have received from the community and look forward to serving you the best submarine sandwich on the planet,” franchise owner Bret Dunaway said.

Jersey Mike’s is known for its sandwiches made with premium meats and cheeses sliced to order and piled high on in-store baked bread. Jersey Mike’s fans order their subs made Mike’s Way with onions, lettuce and tomatoes topped off with a zing of “the juice” (a red wine vinegar and an olive oil blend).

Guests can place orders in-store or for pickup through the website or through the Jersey Mike’s app. Additionally, delivery is available through the Jersey Mike’s app or through third-party delivery partners. Curbside pickup is available for orders placed in Jersey Mike’s app.

Jeremiah’s Italian Ice

Jeremiah’s Italian Ice opened its first Memphis-area sweets shop on July 20 at 3717 Summer Ave.

The brand is known for its signature Gelati treat. It’s the perfect layering of an Italian ice with creamy soft ice cream.

Sam Millson is the Memphis franchise owner. His shop has quickly gained attention not just for its icy treats, but for the mural on the side of the building that says “Summer is the new Poplar.”

“Summer Avenue has a long culture of being a fantastic food street," Millson said. "We wanted to be part of this fantastic community."

At approximately 3,000 square feet, it’s the largest location in the franchise. “We wanted our customers to have a place to come and have a good time,” Millson said, adding the shop has both indoor and outdoor seating.

Jeremiah’s first location opened in 1996 in Winter Park, Florida. Today, there are more than 100 locations.

Millson plans to open a second Memphis-area location in Cordova in spring 2024.

Hours: Noon-11 p.m. daily.
