Sweet Magnolias EP Previews a Second Season of Secrets and Shake-Ups: 'Happy People Make For Dull TV'
During production on Season 2 of Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson had to constantly remind her cast that “happy people make for dull TV,” promising to shake up their storylines like never before. “And the more I shake them up,” she told them, “the more it means I love your character.”
If that’s the case, Anderson’s love runs deep for just about everyone in Serenity, as no character — and certainly no relationship — ends the show’s sophomore season exactly as they begin it on Friday, Feb. 4.

Having seen all 10 episodes of Season 2, we can confirm that the show’s sophomore outing is loaded with curveballs for Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley) and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and you’ll need to pay close attention if you hope to solve the season’s multiple ongoing mysteries.
Oh, and one more thing: This time around, readers of Sherryl Woods’ Sweet Magnolias book series won’t necessarily have the advantage.
“While we deeply appreciate, admire and respect Ms. Woods and the books, we did move away from them a bit in Season 2 through a combination of characters we added to the show and incidents that we added,” Anderson tells TVLine, noting that the car accident was one major addition.
