Swedish Film Institute Names Former SVT Exec Anna Croneman As CEO

The Swedish Film Institute has appointed former Sveriges Television exec Anna Croneman as its new CEO. She will take up her post in mid-April 2024.

Croneman originally trained as a producer at the Swedish Institute of Dramatic Art. At Sveriges Television, Croneman served as Head of Drama. She held the role since 2017. Some of her commissioning credits at the broadcaster include Caliphate, Thin Blue Line, and Blackwater. Before that, she was with Avanti Film, a production company that she co-founded. She also previously served as Vice Chair of the SFI board and the Swedish Film&TV-Producers Association.

“Swedish film is facing some huge challenges, and the task ahead feels quite overwhelming at this point. Having said that, it is, of course, a great honor to take over as CEO of the Swedish Film Institute,” said Croneman.

“I am grateful for this opportunity, and promise to do my utmost to establish a new and better foundation for the future of Swedish film and the preservation of our film heritage, alongside expert colleagues and some of the leading representatives of our industry in Sweden.”

Croneman replaces Anette Novak, who was stood down last September after just under a year in post. The reason for Novak’s departure was not disclosed. Speculation in local media suggested Novak’s departure was without warning and instructed by the Institute’s board. Åsa Sjöberg has been the interim CEO since Novak’s departure.

“The board considers that there is a need for new leadership. The intention is not to change the direction of the business,” board chairwoman Gunilla von Platen said in a statement at the time.
