Springfield fans of the "Shrek" franchise will finally be able to indulge in the international trend of dressing up as their favorite movie characters and dancing to remixes of Smash Mouth's "All Star." The Riff is inviting fans to "get Shrek'd" at Springfield's first official Shrek Rave next month.

The Shrek Rave is 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at The Riff. Tickets are available for $15 online at bit.ly/44jTgRC.

The first "Shrek" movie was released in May 2001, but the franchise has beamed back into the spotlight many times over the last 20-plus years. Most recently, "Shrek" fans across the world have been enjoying the fully immersive experience that is a Shrek Rave.

Held in intimate venues, Shrek Raves feature national and local DJs remixing the franchise's soundtrack as fans dress to the nines as their favorite characters — from Shrek himself to Donkey, Princess Fiona, Lord Farquaad and the Fairy Godmother.

The Shrek Rave trend began in March 2022, when content creator Jordan Craig (known on social media as Ka5sh) held his first Shrek-themed party in Los Angeles. Rapper Rico Nasty even made an appearance at the party.

Photos and videos from the party circulated on social media quickly and before he knew it, Craig was receiving requests for Shrek Raves in different cities. Craig held his second Shrek Rave in New York a few months later and the demand hasn't appeared to dwindle over the last year and a half. The official Shrek Rave Instagram has more than 42,000 followers and the Springfield show is one of over 30 announced this month. Though the raves started in the states, Craig has also held them in Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

Tapping into more early 2000s nostalgia, Craig debuted his Big Bubble Rave, a "SpongeBob SquarePants" rave in October 2022. The official Big Bubble Rave's Instagram has more than 27,000 followers.

"Shrek The Musical" will debut as a part of the Great Southern Bank Broadway Season at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts next spring. The musical runs March 19-21, 2024.
