SW Pride Barbershop celebrates 60 years

Mar. 11—The Southwest Pride Barbershop Chorus will host something a little different for their 60th Anniversary Show.

Unlike a traditional barbershop concert, there is a two part show which will have two performances at 7:30 p.m. March 22 and at 2 p.m. March 23, at McMahon Auditorium in Lawton.

The show is "The Great Barbershop Bake-Off" and is an original one-act musical comedy written by Neil West with help from several current and former chorus members for the lyrics.

According to a press release, the show has the chorus jump from the pan to the ...oven?

"When the chorus gets invited to be contestants on a television baking show, they jump at the chance," the release states. "Each team's challenge is to design and bake a confection that is symbolic of one of their favorite barbershop shows performed by Southwest Pride over the last 60 years."

Then the group will sing the songs represented in their creations.

"It's a baking show with a barbershop harmony twist, and the result is either baking brilliance or barbershop buffoonery," the release states.

Three local lawton celebrities will be the guest judges for the bake off — Jan Stratton and Monte Brown, former news anchors on KSWO Channel 7 News, and veteran stage performer Brad Hobbs.

After intermission, a more classic concert experience, will focus on music from the 1960s. The cast will feature their favorite '60s fashion and tunes.

Special guest "Flair," a ladies barbershop quartet featuring Angie Mack, Karen Andrews, Judy Martinez and Lacy West will join in the fun.

The chorus is under the direction of Lacy West and Assistant Director Bill Penn.

Tickets can be purchased through chorus members, at Scott's House of Flowers in Lawton, at the door on performance dates, or by calling or ordering online through McMahon Auditorium in Lawton, 580-581-3472 and www.swokarts.com. Ticket prices are $20 for adults, and $5 for children six through 18, and free for children under six.
