Before the matriarch's death, the family’s annual tradition had been to gather at Suzanne’s home in Palm Springs for "a week of family, nature and decadent holiday tastes,” Caroline, Bruce's wife since 1991, told PEOPLE. “It’s always been our family’s most treasured holiday.” Caroline and Suzanne previously worked side by side in the kitchen on the holiday.

Suzanne always "handled the turkey and made the world’s best gravy,” Caroline added.

This year, Caroline took the reins. "I learned from the best and I will do my damndest to honor her and feed our family with those familiar comforting tastes of Thanksgiving," she told PEOPLE ahead of the big day.

The Step by Step actress had many "talents in the kitchen,” according to Caroline. In her recent cookbook, Served: From My Family Table to Yours, released before Suzanne's death, Caroline wrote that Suzanne was "one of the best cooks I know."

Caroline and Suzanne "made too many Thanksgiving feasts and amazing family meals to count," wrote Caroline. "We connect in the kitchen—rubbing elbows, tasting and tweaking along the way."
