Two months after a Houston mother was fatally shot in front of her 3-year-old son, police have arrested a murder suspect.

On Monday, Dominique Menefee, 30, was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the death of Sherniqua Banks, 34, according to a statement from the Houston Police Department.

On Sept. 7, Banks was found shot to death in the driver’s seat of a crashed car with her 3-year-old son unharmed in the backseat, police said. A 41-year-old man who had been sitting in the front passenger seat was also shot but is expected to survive.

According to police, Banks was driving along West Gulf Bank Road when Menefee, who was in another vehicle, allegedly began shooting at her car.

Witnesses told police that the suspect’s car had a tire blow out after hitting the curb and fled the scene, per the statement. Police found a car nearby that matched the vehicle’s damage and detained two people.

“At that time, the two individuals were questioned and released without charges filed,” the statement reads. “It was believed a third individual, the shooter, fled on foot prior to officers’ arrival.”

Authorities eventually identified Menefee as a suspect and on Oct. 25, he was charged for his alleged role in the shooting. It’s unclear if he has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

According to court documents obtained by KHOU 11, one of those people initially questioned by police alleged that Menefee thought someone was following them after leaving a gas station and identified Banks' vehicle as the one he thought was following them.

Menefee was on parole for aggravated robbery when he was charged with felony drug possession and released on bond just days before the shooting, Fox 26 reports, citing an official with Crime Stoppers.

While authorities have caught a suspect in the case, Banks’ mother says she “can never get her [daughter] back and it hurts like hell,” according to Fox 26.

"Whoever let him slip through the cracks they need to be held accountable because my daughter is gone," Lisa Callaway told the outlet.
