‘Survivor 45’ mystery explained: Who voted for Sifu?

If you were confused by the vote at the end of the fourth episode of “Survivor 45,” you’re not alone. This week, members of the new Reba tribe visited tribal council for the first time — that is, all of them but Sean Edwards, who had lost every single immunity challenge up to that point. But even after Sean announced his decision to quit and return home to his husband, the votes didn’t go according to plan. Sean received three of the five votes, while Dee Valladares received one and Nicholas “Sifu” Alsup received one. Huh?

As a voted-out Sean was standing up to give his goodbye hugs, Sifu appeared visibly confused. “Who voted for Sifu?” he wondered aloud. “Did you vote for me?” he asked Sean, who responded with a quick, “No.” When Sean brought his torch up to Jeff Probst to be snuffed, Sifu was seen whispering, “Wow. That’s crazy.”

For the record, it was Dee who voted for Sifu. And she tried to get Julie Alley to join her by quietly mouthing his name, but Julie didn’t appreciate the “last-minute stuff,” so she wrote down Sean’s name instead. The other two Sean votes came from Sifu and Janani “J. Maya” Krishnan-Jha, despite them both expressing an interest in working with him earlier in the episode. And Sean is the one voted for Dee. (Contestants are not allowed to write their own names, or it’s likely Sean would have done so since he was so adamant about heading home.)

In the preview for next week’s episode, Sifu expresses his anger at receiving a mystery vote. “Seeing my name, it’s like a volcano. Boom! Ready to go,” he states in a confessional. Will Dee come clean that she’s the one who wrote down Sifu’s name? If so, how will that affect the remaining Reba tribe members? Stay tuned.

So far this season, all of the ousted contestants have come from the original Lulu tribe. Hannah Rose quit on Day 3, Brandon Donlon was voted out on Day 5, Sabiyah Broderick was voted out on Day 7, and now Sean has orchestrated his own elimination on Day 9. Will the Lulu curse continue going forward? If so, Emily Flippen (now on Belo) and Kaleb Gebrewold (still on Lulu but with ex-Belo players) had better watch their backs.
