Heading into the 10th episode of “Survivor 45,” Kendra McQuarrie had just been voted out at tribal council by all of her fellow players. That left four original Reba tribe members still in the game, compared to three from the original Belo and just one from the original Lulu. With the numbers solidly in Reba’s hands, did tonight’s elimination end up being just another paint-by-numbers game move from the dominant alliance?

8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘Survivor’!” In the ninth episode, Jeff shocked the Top 9 when he divided them into three groups for the reward/immunity challenge. The winning three (Bruce, Julie and Kendra) won a rotisserie chicken and Bruce won individual immunity. The losing three (Austin, Emily and Katurah) lost their votes and had to go on a journey to try to earn them back; only Austin was successful. At tribal council, Kendra thought that everyone would write down Jake’s name, but she was blindsided when all of the eligible voters ousted her instead. Who will have their torch snuffed tonight?

8:02 p.m. – Another blindside of an original Belo player that thought they were working with original Reba left Jake pleased to have been saved once again and Reba wondering when, if ever they’d have a chance to get rid of Bruce.

8:04 p.m. – The next morning, Julie was in her feelings over having had to “betray” both Kellie and Kendra in the previous votes. She reflected on who she is outside of the game and how hard it is for her emotionally to have to be the “mama” character that people trust in the game only to have to lie and vote them out in the end. She called the game “an emotional mental test” and affirmed that she still feels like her alliance with Austin, Dee and Drew is her core that she wants to stick with.

8:06 p.m. – Working with Austin and Drew, Emily was growing concerned that the core four alliance of Reba was never going to turn on each other and so she considered working with Katurah, Bruce and Jake to break that foursome up. Emily’s problem with working with old Belo is that none of them are good at working together and that Bruce is unwilling to use his idol to advance the group and only concerned with saving himself with it. In that regard, Bruce tested out a lie on Katurah about having given his idol to Kellie before she was voted out. Once he fessed up that it was a test of his acting skills, Katurah was not convinced that Bruce’s plan was something that would work. Still, Bruce ran with his plan and decided to tell Jake that he no longer has an idol. Jake believed him and Bruce hoped that Jake would take that theory to Reba in order to confuse the majority working against him.

8:13 p.m. – Jeff brought the final eight in for a reward challenge that had them race as individuals through an obstacle course that ended with a ball maze puzzle. The first one to finish would earn an overnight stay at the Survivor Sanctuary and a turkey feast. Jake, Austin and Dee led the charge through the obstacles and got to the puzzle first, but eventually everyone got up and the playing field was leveled. Emily was the strongest on the puzzle, reaching the last part of the puzzle at the same time as Austin did. When Austin’s ball dropped through the last hole, causing him to start over, the door opened for Emily to settle in and finish the puzzle to earn the win!

8:18 p.m. – Shaking with the excitement and surprise of her win, Emily told Jeff that she never believed she’d win any of the challenges and that prior to the challenge everyone vowed to bring her with them on a reward so she was simply proud to have earned her own way. As always, Jeff offered Emily the opportunity to bring people along with her on the reward, adding that letters from home would also be at the dinner table. Her first choice was Julie because she hasn’t been sleeping well and could use the pillow. Her second choice was a very surprised Katurah who didn’t think she’d be chosen. And her third and final choice was Dee in order to complete the “girl’s night out.”

8:27 p.m. – At the reward feast, Katurah, Julie and Dee all gave Emily compliments, telling her that she underestimates herself and should be more confident in her abilities. Emily insisted that they “will have a female winner of Survivor 45” and they all cheered. Katurah noted that Julie has been up at the top of nearly winning every challenge and Dee lamented that Bruce keeps winning and has an idol, too. At that point, Katurah let the women in on Bruce’s “half-brained plan” about lying about giving his idol to Kellie and they all laughed, agreeing that he created that lie prematurely and they’d never buy it. The four women all hatched a plan to split the votes between Jake and Bruce, but to keep majority votes on Bruce just in case he decides not to play his idol so that he’d actually go home.

8:30 p.m. – Back at camp, the guys had a “camping day” where they talked about farts, freely burped, and overall “bro’d out.” It felt like a new experience for Drew who never got to do this stuff much outside of the game and so it was fun for him to try a new thing. Because they knew the women would be eating well, Austin went out spearing with the hopes of bringing in enough fish for the guys to also have a meaty meal.

8:33 p.m. – Wanting to detach himself from Bruce, Jake went to Drew with the information that Bruce would like to target Dee for the next vote. He also told Drew that Bruce told him he gave his idol to Kellie and so he’s now without it. That was welcome news to Drew who immediately took the info to Austin and they rejoiced that they’d have the chance to actually get Bruce out as long as he doesn’t win immunity.

8:39 p.m. – The letters from home that the women received sent them all into bursts of tears as they reflected on the people they left behind. Julie heard from her brother who called her a hero, Katurah’s sister said she doesn’t need to find an idol because she’s already her idol, Dee’s father said that they pray for her every day, and Emily realized that she’s missing out on the move to a new house that her boyfriend was doing without her.

8:43 p.m. – When the group was reunited the next day, Drew told Emily what Jake said about Bruce’s idol which prompted Emily telling him that it’s “100% a lie” because Katurah told the women about Bruce’s ruse. That solidified that Jake would be the plan B if Bruce plays his idol. Wanting to treat Jake well enough to earn his vote in the end, Emily went to him to be honest that he’s the plan B and so in order to save him they’d need to find a way to get someone else on the chopping block. Jake pitched Drew as that other option, but eventually that got back to Drew (via Julie). Drew was pissed that Jake of all people was throwing him under the bus because Drew had worked to save him in the last few votes. When Drew confronted Jake about it, the two guys blew up at each other because neither was willing to communicate to the other out of an indignant sense of pride.

8:50 p.m. – For the immunity challenge, Jeff brought the survivors out in the water for an endurance competition where they’d have to hang on to a steep ramp hanging over the water for as long as possible. Emily was the first to fall out of the challenge, leaving Katurah who was “too in the head” about her fear of the water. Katurah continued to hang on for a while, listening to Jeff’s assurances that she’d be safe, but Katurah’s panic attack did not subside and so she decided to get off the ramp back on the dock instead of falling into the water. The remaining six all moved on to the next smaller hand-hold, but Julie couldn’t hang much longer after that and was the next to fall.

8:56 p.m. – When the remaining five moved to the next hand hold, Jeff also asked them to extend their legs out flat instead of using them as a wedge as they had been before. Dee was the last to make the transition and then bowed out shortly after, leaving the shot at immunity to the four men. Drew was the next to fall, leaving only Jake, Austin and Bruce with a chance to win. Struggling to stay in it, Jake repositioned a few times, but then his strength gave out and he slid down into the water as well. Austin and Bruce stared each other down, checking how solid the other was and occasionally readjusting to gain space on their board. Eventually Bruce could no longer hold, slid off, and left Austin as the immunity winner for the first time.

9:05 p.m. – Back at camp for the first time without the immunity necklace, Bruce still felt safe because he knew he has a hidden idol in order to protect himself. He said it would “come down to a ricochet” of votes, leaving Jake as the most vulnerable. Julie was happy for the vote to be on Jake because she was still mad that he voted for her a few weeks ago, but the decision was still something the group had to discuss. Katurah privately told Emily that no one can beat Julie in the end and so they need to find a time for her to go, like this week. Emily agreed and so she went to Bruce to tell him that Julie isn’t with him in order to start a narrative that they can put four votes on Julie to make her the target instead of Jake. Emily’s true plan was to “appeal to Bruce’s ego” so that she could outplay him and get him to not use his idol so that he’d go home instead. Emily wanted Katurah to know her plan so she told her that they all need to convince Bruce that it’s Julie so that they can get him out this week and then next week follow through on a vote against Julie.

9:10 p.m. – When the plan got around to Jake, he was upset that Bruce and everyone else had made him look like a fool with the idol lie and so that left him feeling like there’s no one in the game he can trust. He got emotional on the beach as he thought about how he’s been on the bottom in every vote and no one has been willing to make moves with him. Jake’s breakdown worried Bruce who was counting on him to vote for Julie so that they could “turn the game on its head” by getting rid of a Reba four.

9:18 p.m. – At the start of Tribal Council, Emily noted that the energy was very different because for the first time in a few weeks Bruce doesn’t have protection. Jake said she also felt a different energy because he felt approached more often than he had at previous votes, but still acknowledged that he’s the “tribe pariah” because he’s not included in any of the plans and has been treated as a pawn. He spoke to his insecurities in the real world about having “imposter syndrome” and how that was playing out for him in the game as well. On the flip side, Jeff pointed out that Julie had been referred to as “mama J” by everyone and how that feels for her. Julie opened up about how it’s nice, but also a burden because it calls into question every time she betrays people like she did Kendra and Kellie. Emily and Katurah mentioned that power dynamics would shift after this vote, largely because idols and advantages might be at play. Most of them were certain that an idol would be played tonight because they unanimously knew that Bruce is in possession of a hidden idol and he’d have cause to play it.

9:24 p.m. – At the ballot box, we saw Drew cast a vote for Jake saying “third try’s the charm” and Bruce wrote down Julie’s name. Despite everyone believing something would be played, no one stood up to use an idol or an advantage and so Jeff read the votes: Jake, Jake, Jake, Julie, Bruce, Bruce, Bruce, Bruce. And so it was — Bruce didn’t play his idol and so he was sent home with it in his pocket instead with everyone, including the jury, gleefully smiling.

NEXT TIME: Austin and Dee continue to get close, Drew considers turning on Julie, and Dee feels like her fate is in Julie’s hands.
