SURRY — You are invited to the Nottoway Tribe of Virginia Powwow. The exciting two-day premier event is great fun for all ages.

The premier event on Saturday Sept. 16 and Sunday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. includes intertribal dancing, food and craft vendors, Tribal Citizens story telling activities, Frankie Red Hawk primitive weapons and native survival skills demonstration, Anthropologist Dr. Buck Woodard's Nottoway Indian trade during the mid-18th century discussion, Native American cooking, educational exhibits/demos [beading, basket weaving, making corn husk dolls, etc.] and community services information.

The Blackwater Library mobile van will also be on the Recreation Center grounds, and the Department of Veterans Affairs/VA Central Office will be present with vital information for veterans.

Yapatoko, host drum, and Red Clay, guest drum, will accompany the dynamic dancers lead by Mike Harmon, lead male dancer, and Adrienne Harmon, lead female dancer. Guest drums are welcomed. Rick Kelly returns as the master of ceremonies and Michael Nephew will serve as the arena director.

The Grand Entry is at noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at the gate on event days only. The gates open at 10 a.m. on both days.

Nottoway Tribe of Virginia Powwow: Admission pricing

  • General admission $8.00

  • Seniors [65 years and over] $5

  • Youth [under 18 years] $5

  • Children under 12 free when accompanied by an adult

The 2023 Powwow kicks off Surry County's celebration of heritage and culture associated with the VA250 Commemoration, the 250th anniversary celebration of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War and US Independence in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The event sponsored by the Virginia Indian Circle and Square and the Surry County Parks and Recreation is held at the Surry County Community Center located at 205 Enos Farm Drive [Colonial Trail West, Highway 10 at Highway 31] in Surry.
