Surf's Up for School of Rays Catching Waves at Florida Beach

A school of cownose rays, known as a “fever,” was spotted swimming close to the shore and riding waves at a beach in St Petersburg, Florida.

Michael McCarthy, who captured the footage with his company, See Through Canoe, said the rays were “surfing at the beach and eating clams at the shoreline.”

“Although rays will sometimes surf waves, this is the first time I’ve ever seen it in decades spent on the water,” he told Storyful. “It is also the first time I’ve seen a fever of rays come up on the shoreline like this.” Credit: Michael McCarthy/See Through Canoe via Storyful
