The ‘Supernatural Spinoff?’ Question Refuses to Die — Here’s What CW Boss Is Now Saying

Supernatural is over, but the days of the CW series being brought up during the network’s Television Critics Association winter press tour presentation are not.

Former CW President Mark Pedowitz always came to the event prepared to field reporters’ questions about the long-running drama’s future — his go-to answer: “As long as Jensen and Jared want to do it” — and about expanding the franchise. And once again, the latter topic came up on Thursday during an executive session with The CW’s new boss, President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz.

“We’ve had no discussions about any kind of spinoff,” Schwartz replied, while acknowledging the show’s popularity.

Supernatural was one of the Top 10 most-streamed shows last year. And it’s an incredible franchise with an incredible legacy, incredible history,” Schwartz said, adding that “we’re really excited about the new season of Walker with Jared [Padalecki].” (Get a first look at Walker Season 4 here.)

Of course, The CW already had its chance at a spinoff with The Winchesters, which was cancelled last May after just one season. The offshoot centered around Dean and Sam’s parents, John Winchester (played by The In Between‘s Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (American Housewife‘s Meg Donnelly), and was described as “the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world.” It was told from the perspective of their eldest son, Dean, with Supernatural co-lead Jensen Ackles narrating. The actor also executive-produced the series alongside his wife Danneel Ackles and showrunner Robbie Thompson (who was an EP/writer on Supernatural).

After attempts to find The Winchesters a new home failed, Ackles thanked fans on Twitter for their support before explaining, “timing is everything. With a massive network shift coupled with an industry strike… welp… that’s some unfortunate timing.”

Prior to The Winchesters, Supernatural aired two backdoor pilots for the potential spinoffs Wayward Sisters and Bloodlines, both of which failed to earn series orders. Supernatural wrapped up its 15-season run in November 2020.

Supernatural fans, do you want to see a new spinoff? Or are you OK with letting the franchise rest?
