Supernatural boss previews this week's very meta episode within a very meta season

Despite the fact that much of the premise of Supernatural‘s final season is meta — with Chuck as the writer of the story — the season wouldn’t be complete without a couple standout hours (or a flashback episode). “The whole season by and large is meta,” co-showrunner Andrew Dabb tells EW. “But I think we’ve got a couple episodes that — maybe not to the extent that ‘The French Mistake’ did — but will scratch that itch.”

Specifically, Dabb’s talking about episode 10 titled “The Heroes’ Journey,” which will feature the return of Garth and, from the looks of it, involves Sam and Dean holding babies. The episode description reads, “Sam and Dean hit the road to help an old friend, but it appears that their luck may have finally run out and they are the ones who may be in need of rescue.”

As Dabb puts it, “Nothing’s going to be ‘The French Mistake’ in that way, but [episode 10] is meta in a way I think fans will enjoy,” Dabb says. “It’s a little bit lighter, which after the first part of our season is something that felt necessary.” How light, you ask? Dabb adds, “Sam and Dean get told to take their shirts off, so there’s also that.”

Also, looking down the line of Supernatural episodes still to come, Dabb previews episode 14, where “politeness and manners play a big role,” he says, adding, “We meet a character with a deep tie to our guys, or a history at least, who’s very big into manners, which for Sam and Dean — and particularly Dean — is not always the best combination.” In other words, it’s Dean’s “greatest challenge ever,” Dabb says with a laugh.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
