It was the starting Gunn in Metropolis.

The cornerstone of Warner Bros. Discovery’s rebooted series based on its DC Comics intellectual property has officially begun principal photography. The movie previously known as “Superman: Legacy” is expected in theaters July 11, 2025, but its writer-director James Gunn, who with producer Peter Safran co-heads DC Studios, announced via social media that he’s sticking with just “Superman.”

“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN.  Making our way to you July 2025,” he wrote.

He also shared an image, a close-up of  Kal-El, the Last Son of Krypton’s chest—the familiar Superman logo with a little bit of snow on it. This suggests that he is busting out of his icy Fortress of Solitude. If you don’t know what I am talking about, it means you played sports as a kid.

Gunn also remarked that February 29 is Superman’s birthday. Did you know that Leap Day was the Big Blue Boy Scout’s special day? Makes sense for a guy that can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

“Superman” stars David Corenswet as Kal-El, who disguises as Clark Kent, the mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet. Emmy and two-time Golden Globe-winner Rachel Brosnahan is his co-worker and love interest Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult is the villain and mastermind Lex Luthor. Others in the cast include Skyler Gisondo as the Daily Planet’s young photographer Jimmy Olsen (I bet he’s a whiz with apps in the new one), Sara Sampaio as Luthor’s gal pal Eve Teschmacher, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific (the world’s third-smartest man!), and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

Specifics of the storyline are under wraps but word is that it follows the lead of “All-Star Superman,” a comic book run by Frank Morrison and Frank Quitely from the early aughts. Gold Derby dot com would never be so loathsome as to recommend a comic book to you like some gross, disgusting nerd, but if there is one collection out there that you should check out, “All-Star Superman” really does rule (and can be found used on Amazon for about ten bucks).
