Superintendent: Threat of gun violence against Tiverton High School 'not credible at all'

TIVERTON — A threat of gun violence against Tiverton High School on Thursday was deemed not credible by school administrators who worked with Tiverton police.

In a video message to the school community sent out late Wednesday, Superintendent Peter Sanchioni said the threat derived from a post on the social media app TikTok and is part of a nationwide trend.

“This is not a credible threat at all,” Sanchioni said. “We’ve analyzed it a million different ways. We know our students. There’s been no threats made directly by anyone in our school system, so we believe (Thursday) will be just like today, another day of education in a very safe educational setting.”

Students, Sanchioni said, saw the threatening post and immediately alerted administrators and faculty.

“I do commend the students who did react to what they saw and sent messages to our online reporting form or contacted their administrators directly,” the superintendent said. “That’s exactly the reaction that we want any time they feel there is a threat to our school system.”

In an accompanying post to the video, Tiverton Public Schools said: “As with any concern, the Tiverton Police Department will increase presence within our schools in an effort to ease concern.”
