‘Supergirl’ Poster Pays Tribute to ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’

The CW is adapting another famous DC Comics cover to promote an upcoming episode of one of its superhero shows. This time, it’s “Supergirl.”

The poster for this season’s second episode, titled “The Last Children of Krypton,” depicts Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) holding an unconscious Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). Much like last year’s Flash poster that paid homage to the iconic “Flash of Two Worlds” issue, this poster harkens back to the 1985-86 mini-series “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” In the comics, the scene is a bit darker, as Superman is holding his Kryptonian cousin shortly after her death.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told CBR said that the “Crisis” moment was originally planned to happen in Season 1, when Supergirl faced off with Reactron.

“When Superman rescues her from Reactron, we actually wrote in there that [the shot] was going to cut off his head so you could just see his body holding her in that classic pose.”

Since Hoechlin was cast to play the Man of Steel, the chance to re-create the iconic moment in its entirety was too good to pass up.

“It actually says, ‘We’ll have a “Crisis on Infinite Earths” pose here,'” Kreisberg revealed of the script for the episode.

“Supergirl” airs on the CW on Monday at 8/7c.
