Supergirl finale reveals why Chris Wood, Jeremy Jordan are no longer series regulars

After tonight’s finale, we know how Supergirl will handle Jeremy Jordan only recurring in season 4.
In the CW drama’s season 3 conclusion, Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath) and Saturn Girl (Amy Jackson) return from the future to help the DEO fight Reign. After the initial battle, Brainiac 5 reveals that his evil, distant relative — a.k.a. Brainiac, one of Superman’s greatest enemies — released a virus in the future that kills all A.I. because Brainiac wants to be the only one, and he wants Winn to travel to the future because he’s the only who can stop him.
At first, Winn was hesitant about leaving because his entire life in here in the 21st century, but he ultimately decided to go on this adventure. “I’ve been searching for my calling. You know, this is it. I’m gonna save the future,” he says to James (Mehcad Brooks) toward the end of the hour.
However, Winn isn’t the only person heading to the future: Mon-El (Chris Wood) decided to return with him because he realized he needed to defend it. But unlike Jordan, Wood will be not be back next season. EW has confirmed that Wood is no longer a series regular. TVLine was the first to break the news.
“The plan for Chris was always to have him on the show for two years,” executive producer Robert Rovner told TVLine. “We’ve loved telling Mon-El’s story, as well as the story we’ve told for him and Kara. We hope the fans felt that it was a satisfying conclusion.”
With Winn leaving, the DEO will need a new tech guy. Luckily, Brainiac 5 will be taking Winn’s place there, since the future has become inhospitable to A.I. This turn of events isn’t totally surprising because news broke last week that Rath was promoted to series regular for the show’s fourth season.
However, there are more changes afoot at the DEO. At the end of the hour, J’onn decided to step down from the DEO because he wants to spend time living among humans and getting better acquainted with the world he’s chosen to call home — which is very similar to what Martian Manhunter did on the excellent Justice League Animated. But don’t worry, J’onn isn’t leaving the DEO director-less. Before leaving, he asks Alex (Chyler Leigh) — who was prepared to quit because she wanted to become a mother and didn’t want to have such a dangerous field job — to take over as director of the DEO, and Alex agrees.
