The life story of Christopher Reeve will finally arrive in theaters this fall in Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.

Warner Bros. announced that DC Studios, in partnership with HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films, and Fathom Events, will be holding an exclusive release of the feature-length documentary about the late star of 1978’s Superman: The Movie in theaters on September 21st in the United States. Additionally, the documentary will get a special theatrical encore on September 25th in time for Reeve’s 72nd birthday before getting released in international territories.

“On behalf of not only Warner Bros., but also my colleagues at DC, HBO, and CNN, it’s an honor to be a part of bringing Christopher Reeve and his singular legacy to audiences again,” said Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution Jeff Goldstein. “It was at this very studio where he made us all believe a man could fly, and this documentary reveals what made him a true hero, on- and off-screen. Partnering with our friends at Fathom Events to deliver this very special film to the big screen was an opportunity we could not pass up.”

Who is Christopher Reeve?

At age 26, Reeve became an overnight superstar when Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie hit screens in 1978, redefining the Man of Steel with sensitivity and courage that inspired the world. Though the actor went on to make three more Superman appearances between 1981 and 1987, Reeve found it difficult to break out of his iconic role as most of his non-Superman movies underperformed at the box office. He attempted to reboot his image as a character actor in made-for-television projects in the early ’90s until his tragic horse-riding accident in 1995 left him paralyzed from the waist down. From that point on until the end of his life, Reeve became a worldwide advocate for the physically disabled, founding the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for spinal cord injury support and research.

“Everyone knows that Superman is a superhero, but I’m eager for audiences to discover the REAL superhero behind Superman,” said Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt. “This film is an extraordinary story that takes a deep dive into the man Christopher Reeve really was and the courage he displayed. We’re looking forward to working with our partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. to bring this inspiring film to theatres nationwide.”

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is scheduled for a limited theatrical release in the United States on September 21st and 25th. Visit Fathom Events for more information and participating theaters.
