Super Bowl Ad Shows Sam Elliott Reciting Lyrics To 'Old Town Road'

Can't Tell Him Nothing About How To Sell Chips

Sam Elliott doing just about anything is automatically cool. Now he's taking that level-headed demeanor to talk about Cool-Ranch Doritos through one of the biggest songs of 2019. The ad will be aired during Super Bowl LIV, which kicks off Feb. 2.

Rolling Stone writes that a Super Bowl teaser video for Elliott's new ad for Doritos is out. The actor is reciting lyrics from Lil Nas X' "Old Town Road," but he does it so well that he turns it into a dramatic piece of Western drama.

Watch Sam Elliott Bring Down the House

In this teaser video, Elliott, dressed like The Stranger from The Big Lebowski, walks into a saloon and sidles up to the bar for a drink. The crowd falls to a hush as Elliott gets his drink without even asking. The rest of the room is quiet as Elliott starts reciting the lyrics:

“I got the horses in the back. Horse tack is attached. Hat is matte black. I got the boots that’s black to match.

“Ridin’ on a horse. Ha! You can whip your Porsche. I been in the valley. You ain’t been up off that porch, now. Can't nobody tell me nothing.”

Lil Nas X Has Got the World In His Hands

Elliott then tells the bartender, "You can't tell me nothing," right before we hear that old familiar bass for "Old Town Road," which begins to shake the room as Elliott saunters out. The bag of Doritos slides down the bar next to the date for the Super Bowl, and that's it.

People writes that the teaser ad has arrived soon after more Doritos news:

"The Super Bowl teaser comes shortly after the announcement of two new Doritos products earlier this month: Flamin’ Hot Limon that brings the signature heat with a tangy twist, and a new-and-improved Cool Ranch flavor with even more of the classic Cool Ranch flavor than ever before."

Success Story

Lil Nas X' "Old Town Road" was originally released in December 2018, then re-released in March 2019, which is when it took off into the stratosphere.

Lil Nas X also released a remix of the song with Billy Ray Cyrus, and that's just as huge.

What's so interesting about the song isn't just the insanely catchy bass line, but the fact that it merges country, rap and trap, a genre that's fairly new to popular music.

The song also uses a banjo sample from Nine Inch Nails' "34 Ghosts IV," so there's that.

According to Wikipedia, Lil Nas X bought the instrumental for $30 and slapped down "Old Town Road" in one day. The rapper was going through hard times when he wrote it, which influenced the lyrics. It's a pretty amazing story.
