Sundance Film Festival 2023 Lineup to Showcase 99 Feature Films

The Sundance Film Festival has announced its 2023 features program, including the titles that will compete in the narrative and documentary categories.

Selections for the U.S. Dramatic Competition include Randall Park’s directorial debut, “Shortcomings”; “Sometimes I Think About Dying,” starring Daisy Ridley; Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman’s “Theater Camp”; “Magazine Dreams,” headlined by Jonathan Majors and Taylour Paige; and “A Thousand and One,” produced by Lena Waithe and starring Teyana Taylor. All 12 films featured in the lineup are world premieres.

The U.S. Documentary Competition will see the world premieres of Lisa Cortés’ “Little Richard: I Am Everything”; “Going Varsity in Mariachi,” which dives into the world of competitive high school mariachi; and “The Stroll,” a history of New York City’s Meatpacking District told from the perspective of transgender sex workers.

In addition to “Sometimes I Think About Dying” and “Little Richard,” Day One screenings are “birth/rebirth,” “L’Immensità,” “It’s Only Life After All,” “Kim’s Video,” “The Longest Goodbye,” “The Pod
Generation,” “Radical,” “Shayda,” and “Run Rabbit Run,” as well as a Shorts program, to be announced at a later date.

“Blueback,” an Australian film featured in the Kids program, is set to screen at the Opening Night Gala, where Sundance alum Ryan Coogler, Nikyatu Jusu, W. Kamau Bell and others will be honored.

“The Pod Generation” will receive the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize for the year’s most oustanding depiction of science and technology in a feature film.

“Maintaining an essential place for artists to express themselves, take risks, and for visionary stories to endure and entertain is distinctly Sundance,” said Robert Redford, founder and president of Sundance Institute. “The Festival continues to foster these values and connections through independent storytelling. We are honored to share the compelling selection of work at this year’s Festival from distinct perspectives and unique voices.”

“It is critical for the arts to foster dialogue, especially during unprecedented times — these stories are needed to provoke discussion, share diverse viewpoints, and challenge us,” added Joana Vicente, CEO of Sundance Institute. “We are delighted to welcome this group of passionate artists to the
Festival and look forward to celebrating the films together with audiences.”

Kim Yutani, the film festival’s Director of Programming, said: “In so many ways this year’s slate reflects the voices of communities around the world who are speaking out with urgency and finally being heard. Across our program, impactful storytelling by fearless artists continues to provide space for the community to come together to be entertained, challenged, and inspired.”

This year’s festival will run from Jan. 19 through Jan. 29 in Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah. Its online counterpart will play online from Jan. 24 to Jan. 29. Shorts and Indie Episodic selections will be announced on Dec. 13.
