Sundance Film Festival 2016: An Insider’s Party Guide

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival kicks off on Jan. 21 in Park City, Utah — and until Jan. 30, when the winners are announced (by a competitions jury which includes Jon Hamm and Lena Dunham), the ski town will be swarming with Hollywood stars. Here’s where festivalgoers will find talent like Matt Damon (“Manchester by the Sea”), Kristen Stewart (“Certain Women”), Anna Kendrick (“The Hollars”), Michael Shannon (“Complete Unknown”), Kate Beckinsale (“Welcome to the Dollhouse”) and Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez (“The Fundamentals of Caring,” the festival’s closing night choice) — plus some stellar booze, food, snow gear, swag and fun.

Thursday, Jan. 21

Delta Festival Shuttle – 11:05 a.m.

After last year’s success, Delta has once again arranged a curated Sundance-themed flight to transport 180 celebrities and industry elite — who’ll be starting the party early, with perks like a pre-flight brunch and cocktails at Lemonade, in-flight entertainment, priority check-in and security access and a special gift.

Back for the 11th year to mix media and music, the green-themed lodge (with the Mirai, a Toyota hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, on display) will present seven live performances, brand showcases and celebrity interviews. The musical roster includes Grammy-nominated artist Andra Day on Friday at 2:30 p.m., indie pop band Air Traffic Controller on Saturday at 4 p.m., Jamie Bendell on Sunday at 4 p.m. and R. City on Sunday at 5 p.m. An Arctic Blast/ Earth Day Network benefit on Friday at 9 p.m. will also feature music by pop star Peppina and New York singer/songerwriter Natalie Gelman.

Drink, eat, glam and recharge — per the invite — over daily DJ sets from 3-6 p.m. (featuring N.Y. and L.A. favorites, like Mel DeBarge on Friday, DJ Mr. Best on Saturday and DJ Equal on Sunday), and house DJ Mike Nouveau will hold things down the remainder of the time in BMF’s music-savvy suite.

The Independent Filmmakers’ Lounge will have gifting, live music, waffles, cocktails/ mocktails/ coffee and more by day; premieres, screenings, panels and parties — with confirmed guests like Lily-Rose Depp, Justin Long, Katie Couric and Kristen Stewart — by night. Have a hands-on experience with Canon equipment, join industry discussions (with experts like Nick Higgins of “O.J.: Made in America” and Joe Passarelli of “Anomalisa”), check out exhibits and score some snacks at this photo-centric lounge, which will have daily programming through Tuesday.

Vida Tequila WhoWhatWear Pop-Up Lounge – 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Jan. 22-25

By day, the pop-up, whose permanent residences will debut in Park City in 2017, will be an invite-only beauty experience (offering hair, makeup and nail services) courtesy of The Glam App and WhoWhatWear, and “uncommon cocktails,” Vida Tequila-style.

Now in its fourth year at Sundance, presenting sponsor Canada Goose (known for its Kensington Parkas, Hybridge Lite Hoodies and recent fashion short “Out There,” directed by Paul Haggis) is debuting Festival Base Camp — a unique outdoor venue that will host happy hours, food trucks (with hearty Canadian delicacies), concerts, screenings and performances all day long.

Kickstarter is hosting filmmakers and creatives for panels, karaoke, performances and other events, in hopes of… well, kickstarting film things (as $320 million and counting has been pledged to film projects on Kickstarter).

Experience the festival through the lens of Samsung, which is offering a full schedule of programming including screenings, Q&As, music performances and an inside look at “GONE” (an original VR thriller from Skybound Entertainment, Wevr and Samsung) — plus cafe items and specialty coffee drinks. A reception at 5 p.m. will kick off the first-ever Samsung studio, and other fun components include a visit from the Funny or Die team, and a special #EmojiAllAccess hashtag (which, upon tweeting, could lead to prizes like helicopter rides for Samsung Galaxy owners).

HBO’s artsy documentary (airing on April 4) takes viewers inside famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe’s life, from his early days as a young NYC artist to his untimely death — with interviews from friends including Brooke Shields and Debbie Harry.

ESPN Films’ Official Sundance Premiere Party for the Upcoming “30 for 30” Miniseries Event “OJ: Made in America” – 4-7 p.m.

ESPN Films fetes its five-part documentary miniseries examining race through tracing O.J. Simpson’s professional and criminal trajectory.

“Swiss Army Man” Premiere Party – 5:30 p.m.

Cast including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Dano and directors/writers Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“The Daniels”) will celebrate their film, about an unlikely friendship that forms in the wilderness, at Acura’s Sundance home base. During the day, the lodge-style lounge will be open for guests to recharge their phones, grab snacks or conduct interviews, and Acura Hours happy hours (with live DJs via KCRW) will be held from 3-5 p.m. Saturday-Monday. An Acura NSX supercar display will be signed by celebs and auctioned for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, and Acura is also partnering with Uber to bring on-demand rides to festivalgoers.

Kicking off the weekend-long series of events, Stella Artois will be hosting the premiere of this dark drama about a woman confronting tragedy — with stars Kika Magalhaes, Will Brill, Flora Diaz and writer/director Nicolas Pesce on hand.
