Robert Redford may have declared this year that he’s stepping back from the Sundance Film Festival, but it turns out the semi-retired Oscar winner will be back on screen at the Utah jamboree kicking off next month.

In a jam-packed lineup of 118 films, Redford’s Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia star joins Riley Keough, multiple films from Lena Waithe, Colman Domingo, Daniel Dae Kim, Walking Dead alum Steven Yeun, Joker actor Zazie Beetz, Veep’s Tony Hale, rocker Gary Clark and rapper Meek Mill at the festival, which runs January 23–February 2 in Park City. Also with films in the Sundance lineup unveiled today are Angelina Jolie, David Oyelowo, the iconic Michael Caine, Sienna Miller, Diego Luna, Marvel regular Tessa Thompson, Eva Longoria, frequent Sundancer and Handmaid’s Tale lead Elisabeth Moss, Toni Collette, Billions’ Damian Lewis, Andy Samberg and Oscar winner J.K. Simmons.

Today’s big reveal of the U.S. Competition and World Cinema Competition Dramatic and Documentary categories, plus the Midnight, Spotlight Kids and NEXT slates, for the fest’s 36th edition draws from 27 countries and 44 first-time feature filmmakers.

It’s a point Redford wants to see emphasized in an industry full of franchises and fewer domestic studios.

“Independent artists create and enrich global culture,” said Redford, who plays an unseen POTUS in HBO’s Watchmen, on Wednesday. “Their art, which we’re proud to present, can entertain — and much more: it can, illuminate, agitate, and empower. This year’s Festival is full of films that showcase myriad ways for stories to drive change, across hearts, minds, and societies.”

Certainly, with a record-breaking 15,100 submissions including 3,853 feature-length films, Sundance 2020 is striving to put Hollywood on notice that change is required more than talk. Of the 118 films unveiled today, 44% were directed by one or more women. Digging deeper into the stats, 34% of the films in the lineup were directed by one or more filmmaker of color, and 15% were helmed by one or more people who are LGBTQ+, according to the John Cooper-run festival.

In what is the most inclusive lineup Sundance has ever put together, there are also a record number of seven films from Netflix – an indication of the shifts underway in the industry.

The festival’s Shorts, Indie Episodic and New Frontier lineups are expected to be announced next week.

U.S. DRAMATIC COMPETITION
Presenting the world premieres of 16 narrative feature films, the Dramatic Competition offers Festivalgoers a first look at groundbreaking new voices in American independent film. Films that have premiered in this category in recent years include The Farewell, Honey Boy, Clemency, Eighth Grade, Sorry to Bother You and The Miseducation of Cameron Post. 47% of the directors in this year’s U.S. Dramatic Competition are women; 52% are people of color; 5% are LGBTQ+.

The 40-Year-Old Version / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Radha Blank, Producers: Lena Waithe, Radha Blank, Inuka Bacote-Capiga, Jennifer Semler, Rishi Rajani, Jordan Fudge) — A down-on-her-luck New York playwright decides to reinvent herself and salvage her artistic voice the only way she knows how: by becoming a rapper at age 40. Charm City Kings / U.S.A. The Evening Hour / U.S.A. A Thousand Cuts / U.S.A., Philippines (Director and screenwriter: Ramona S. Diaz, Producers: Ramona S.
